🌡️ Heatwaves are one of the most dangerous natural weather hazards. 🚑 Intense heatwaves can pose serious health, social, environmental, and economic risks. 📈 The IPCC states that with further global warming, we can expect an increase in the intensity, frequency, and duration of heatwaves. 🏘️ To ensure the resilience of local communities, we need to help people adapt to climate change and reduce their climate-related risks. 🌍 Integrating climate and health action can make a real difference in people's daily lives. 🔗 Read the latest #StateOfClimate Services report to enhance your #ClimateAction strategies: https://lnkd.in/e6Qz6VTT

The U.N.'s authoritative voice on weather, climate and water
Info
We advance meteorological science for a better future for all. WMO provides the framework for international cooperation to advance meteorological, climatological, hydrological, and related environmental services to improve the well-being of all. This is why WMO advocates for an Earth system approach to encompass all the weather, climate, and water-related cycles traversing the globe, irrespective of national boundaries.

🌾 Agriculture is highly vulnerable to climate variability and climate change. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) collaborate closely for #ClimateAction and food security in these areas: 🌧️ Climate services for agriculture 📡 Early warning systems 🌊 Disaster risk reduction 🚨 FAO has an important role to play in the #EarlyWarningsForAll initiative spearheaded by WMO and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). Early warnings and seasonal climate outlooks are crucial for resilience, adaptation, and anticipatory action in agriculture. 🤝🏽 WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 30 May to extend and strengthen an existing partnership for another ten years. This week the World Meteorological Organization reported, according to Copernicus ECMWF, that June was the hottest on record, and the global temperature has been 1.5°C above the pre-industrial era for the 13th month in a row. IPCC’s Synthesis Report shows adaptation options are more constrained and less effective in a warmer world. ➡️ https://bit.ly/SRYRpt23

For International #Sand and #Dust Day #SDSDay, the World Meteorological Organization has released its annual Airborne Dust Bulletin. Sand and dust storms are becoming more frequent and intense because of poor land and water management. Dust concentrations in the worst hit areas in 2023 were above the long-term average, but slightly lower than 2022. We need to be vigilant in the face of continuing environmental degradation and current and future #climatechange. Higher temperatures, drought and higher evaporation lead to lower soil moisture. Combined with poor land management, this is conducive to more sand and dust storms. WMO leads the forecasting and early warning activities of the United Nations Coalition on Combating Sand and Dust Storms. The #EarlyWarningsforAll initiative seeks to bring all hazards under one umbrella, including improved warnings and impact based forecasts of sand and dust storms. https://bit.ly/4f25Lb0

The UN’s ambitious goal of early warning for the world’s entire population looks significantly more achievable after a key vote last month at the Council of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) to “increase free and open data provision” underlying its forecasts. “High-quality data are crucial not only for operational forecasting, but also for developing downstream modelling, including impact models vital for assessing various environmental and societal impacts,” according to an announcement this week that made the vote public.

🌍 Every year, around 2,000 million tons of dust enters the atmosphere, darkening skies and harming air quality in regions that can be thousands of kilometers away, and affecting economies, ecosystems, weather and climate. Much of this is a natural process, but a large part of it is the result of poor water and land management. 📈 Monitoring and forecasting accuracy has improved in recent years due to the progress of numerical models and observation systems. The WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (SDS-WAS), set up in 2007, strives to improve warnings through dedicated regional centres and combines research and operational work. 🌾 It is not all bad news. The long-range transport of sand and dust across oceans is also a valuable source of nutrients and important for the international management of fisheries. 🗣️ #SDSDay

📊 We cannot manage what we don’t measure. 🌍 The Global Greenhouse Gas Watch aims to support WMO Members in mitigation actions undertaken to implement the Paris Agreement. It seeks to fill critical information gaps and provides an integrated, operational framework that brings all space-based and surface-based observing systems under one roof, as well as modelling and data assimilation capabilities in relation to greenhouse gas monitoring. 🔗 Sign up for our quarterly newsletter to stay informed about Global Greenhouse Gas Watch's latest progress, significant events, and crucial updates from the community. https://lnkd.in/ecFH8q-r 📹 European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts
