🔬🌿 Recycling cement paste is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to reduce CO2 emissions in cement production, a new study shows. Researchers from Imperial College London, Empa and EPFL found that CO2 mineralization of cement waste can reduce emissions by up to 15% - equivalent to 0.8% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2020. 🌍 According to lead author Rupert J. Myers from Imperial College London, CO2-mineralized cement could be a leading technology in the fight against climate change. Ellina Bernard, co-author and scientist at Empa's Laboratory for Concrete and Asphalt, adds: "This study shows that the bottleneck for a wider application of CO2 mineralization of end-of-life concrete or other calcium-based industrial waste is the limited supply of carbonatable material. However, CO2 savings of 15% in the production of useful building products are not negligible, and research should continue to focus on reducing the costs and further advancing these Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technologies." Is it possible to reconcile #sustainability and #qualityoflife? Yes, say Empa researchers. But it will require some changes: An ecological and good life is what we are striving for – for all 10 billion people. To calculate this, Hauke Schlesier and Harald Desing from Empa's Technology and Society Laboratory and Malte Schäfer from Technische Universität Braunschweig used the so-called doughnut model. A model with two concentric circles where the outer circle represents the limits of key #planetaryboundaries and an inner circle representing that basic #humanneeds have been met. If the outer circle is exceeded, it means irreversible environmental changes are at stake. Today, we are most severely exceeding the inner circle regarding the ⚠️climate system ⚠️biodiversity ⚠️biogeochemical fluxes of nitrogen and phosphorus The most urgent requirement is to rethink the energy system and agriculture. 🎙️ Neue NEST-Podcast-Folge: Grünes Licht für die Energiewende Mit dem Ja zum neuen Stromgesetz ⚡️ vom 9. Juni ist klar, dass die Schweiz den systematischen Ausbau erneuerbarer Energien vorantreiben will. Klar ist aber auch: Damit wir in Zukunft auf ein widerstandsfähiges, nachhaltiges und bezahlbares Energiesystem zählen können, braucht es einen strukturierten Plan. Wie gross ist der Energiebedarf, den wir durch inländische Produktion decken müssen? Inwiefern lohnt es sich, auf gewisse Importe zurückzugreifen? Welche Anreize kann man setzen, um Verbrauchsspitzen zu brechen? Wo der Name Programm ist: der neue Forschungscampus «co-operate» der Empa und Eawag ist offiziell eröffnet! Ich freue mich über diesen wichtigen Schritt für unsere Forschungsinstitutionen. Heute dürfen wir vor einer topmodernen Infrastruktur stehen – mit einem Laborgebäude, Multifunktionsgebäude, umnutzbaren Parkhaus in Holz-Beton-Hybridbauweise und in der Schweiz einzigartigen Erdsondenfeld. Die Gebäude stecken voller Ideen, mit denen sich Energie sparen oder gewinnen lässt und Rohstoffe ressourceneffizient eingesetzt wurden oder im Sinne der Kreislaufwirtschaft für die spätere Nutzung rückgewonnen werden können. Ebenfalls wird das Areal insgesamt grüner erscheinen – der Grüngürtel ist dabei erst der Anfang. Weitere Massnahmen sind bereits geplant. Eine künstlicherische Installation rundet das Gesamtbild ab. 👉️As far as we know, this is the first system of its kind for #CO2 #electrolysis: Producing #syntheticfuels economically and efficiently from CO2 is a challenge. The reaction is difficult to control, resulting in different reaction products and such that are difficult to separate. So how to control the composition of these products? With catalyst material, electrode microstructure and reaction conditions. But: the number of possible combinations is extremely large. 💡 As part of the ETH Board funded Joint Initiative SynFuels project, researchers led by Corsin Battaglia and Alessandro Senocrate from Empa's Materials for Energy Conversion laboratory have developed a system that can be used to investigate up to ten different reaction conditions as well as catalyst and electrode materials simultaneously.
