When UC Santa Barbara commissioned a new Interactive Learning Pavilion to meet the needs of its growing student population, LMN Architects ensured that the architecture took its cues from the surrounding landscape and fantastic weather. Entro had the pleasure (and the challenge) of designing a wayfinding system for the pavilion’s unique outdoor circulation corridors, which feature stairs, terraces, bridges, and laid-back social spaces. Wayfinding signs also reflect the Pavilion’s canyon-like form, evoking the layered sandstone cliffs of Santa Barbara, with softly curving accents of the shoreline in natural, earthy hues of sand and stone. Click through the album to see signage and other placemaking strategies for adaptive reuse projects! By replicating iconic signs, we can highlight a building's history and original purpose. For new signage, responsive designs ranging from industrial to elegant in classic materials such as wood, stainless steel, and various metal alloys can enhance the architectural (and historical) character of a building. Alternately, bright colours and modern designs can breathe new life into a building and express its new identity. #experientialdesign #wayfinding #signage #placemaking #architecture #adaptivereuse

Shining a spotlight on Mi’kai’sto (Red Crow Community College)'s Exterior Monument, which received a 2023 GDUSA Magazine Award as part of GDUSA’s 60th anniversary showcase! Over two years, Entro helped Mi’kai’sto complete the planning, management, and curation of an ambitious art program, developed by Blackfoot artists. The resulting collection features material, cultural symbols, and contextual elements that are essential to the Blackfoot identity and to the Mi’kai’sto message. A highlight of the art program is an exterior monument that stands as a celebration of Blackfoot culture and a beacon to the community. Its design is derived from the form of a traditional Kainai stand-up headdress. The 22 colourfully illuminated poles stand in a circle with openings facing east and west, defining an accessible and intimate space for gathering or for the contemplation of the Blackfoot values printed on 11 of the poles.
