Bubble is an idealistic, mission-driven organization. We started this company because we believe in the importance of making technology accessible to everyone, and because we personally care about helping people who have ideas they want to bring to life.
Our Values
Our values are our guiding principles at Bubble. They help us focus on what matters most: achieving our mission. We see our values as a reflection of the behaviors we celebrate, prioritize, and find most important to us as a company.
User-centricity
Expand
Remembering that Bubble exists first and foremost to have a positive impact on the people...
Why
There are a lot of ways to earn a living; we picked working for Bubble because we think what Bubble does is important and valuable to the people who use our software. This belief can’t be taken for granted; it needs to be reinforced by actual human concern for the success of people who trust us with their businesses and livelihoods. Our users often don’t have fallback plans. If Bubble stops meeting their needs, they face the loss of their own hopes, dreams, and economic security. That’s a huge weight we carry, and to carry it well means taking responsibility on a user-by-user basis for doing the best we can to help them.
How
• When handling problems users encounter with our software, we stay mindful of the bigger picture and long-term direction, but we also take pragmatic short-term actions to get the specific people involved to a place where the issue isn’t impacting their ability to do business.
• When communicating with our users, we do so with empathy and patience, and keep communication channels open.
• When making business decisions, we keep the needs of our users and their long-term success front-of-mind.
• When hiring, we look for people with a high sense of responsibility and desire to do the right thing.
Empowerment
Expand
Helping build others up by giving them leverage and autonomy. In the context of our team...
Why
We believe that empowering others yields exponential returns. We believe in “teaching to fish” rather than “giving a fish”, as the saying goes. It’s the basis of our product vision, and we think it’s a fundamental principle for creating major and lasting impact. Bubble exists because we believe in this value: it’s about as core to our ethos as you can get.
How
• When helping users, we try to teach them how we got to the answer instead of just giving it to them.
• When building the product, we err on the side of open-endedness; we want to be surprised by what our users build, not dictate what they build to them.
• When managing, we give people as much responsibility as they’re able to take on. We have a permissive culture where the default is to take action and say yes. We lead by aligning vision and goals, not by micro-managing decisions; we want the ultimate outcomes to be owned by the people directly working on the problem.
• When hiring, we look for interest in helping others succeed rather than just their own success. Are they all about their own accomplishments, or are they focused on the positive impact they can have on their team and community?
• When hiring, we look for people who thrive when they are empowered. Do they take a lot of ownership? Are they highly responsible? Are they incredibly competent at what they do?
Fire
Expand
A shared intrinsic motivation to turn our vision as a company into reality, with...
Why
We have an incredibly ambitious vision, which we are tackling with limited people, time, and money, in a rapidly changing competitive landscape. Against those challenges, we believe in pursuing our vision with determination and passion. This drive has to come from within ourselves; no extrinsic motivation is going to be able to help us navigate the twists and turns of building an industry-transforming company. We do this because we believe in it; we believe the world is better off with our product, and we delight in doing excellent work and helping our users succeed.
How
• When hiring, we look for passionate, intrinsically-motivated people who are excited to contribute to our larger goal.
• When setting objectives for ourselves, we dream big and then move forward with urgency.
• When opportunities or challenges arise, we volunteer to go the extra mile.
• When facing adversity, we band together to confront it with courage, honesty, and humor.
• When taking care of ourselves and each other, we keep the fire burning by nurturing our health, work-life balance, and sense of purpose and mission.
Genuineness
Expand
Communicating and taking responsibility as human beings rather than hiding behind...
Why
We believe that genuineness is the basis for building trust. The only way you trust someone is if you know they are communicating with you in a genuine manner, and they’ll take responsibility if things go wrong. We view trust as essential. It’s essential within the Bubble team, because it’s a cornerstone for healthy, effective work together. And it’s essential with our community, because we’re asking them to trust us with their businesses.
How
• When hiring, we look for people who are able to communicate openly with us. Can they explain why they made the choices they did? Can they share what they value? Can they be direct and blunt about things that didn’t go well in their past?
• When making decisions, we share the reasoning behind them in an honest, direct way.
• When things are broken or imperfect, we acknowledge the problems rather than pretending they are fine.
• When talking to our users, we are transparent within reasonable limits, stick to straightforward language, and empathize with them as humans.
• Genuineness doesn’t mean that everything is necessarily public — we still keep things confidential or private — but it means that we err on the side of communicating, and when we do communicate we try to do so honestly.
Kindness
Expand
Treating our teammates and our community with friendliness, consideration, and respect.
Why
We’re pursuing hard, ambitious goals; we’re always going to be under a lot of pressure as a team. The difference between a team that can succeed in overcoming hard challenges and one that falls apart into mutual recrimination is kindness. If we’re caring and supportive to one another, we’ll be able to build a high-trust, effective team that can overcome any challenges that come our way. Likewise, our users are often trying to do difficult, ambitious things with our product, and also feel tremendous pressure. Kindness is the lubricant that creates a healthy relationship with them and helps us enable them to succeed.
How
• When making decisions and communicating, we think about the human impact it will have on our team and community.
• When going about our day-to-day, we try to build a warm, friendly environment. We want to be a place where people feel comfortable and can be their true selves. We’re a diverse group of people with different backgrounds, life experiences, and opinions, and we want a welcoming culture where everyone feels included.
• When disagreeing with each other, we do it respectfully and with the assumption that there’s probably something valuable and important to what the other person is saying even if we don’t understand it yet. We invest the time to create mutual understanding, and approach conflict with a thoughtful, open-minded attitude.
• When setting cultural norms for behavior, we set a high standard for making sure people don’t treat each other in an abusive or demeaning way. We address violations of norms thoughtfully and open-mindedly, but with firmness and without compromising the principle that everyone in the company and community should be treated with respect.
• When hiring, we look for people who respect others, who display self-awareness, and demonstrate the capacity for empathy and consideration.
