Home Product News HMA VPN v2 is being retired

Update — 29.08.2022

The tables have turned. Literally and figuratively. After months and months of heated debates we now have an update, and regrettably, some of you will be saddened by this announcement. Our donkey herd has officially kicked HMA V2 out of the picture; it was launched far away and is now lost in uncharted spaces of abandoned software. Worse luck, the V2 exclusive features have disappeared along with it.

It’s a fact that people will grieve over the departure of V2; we get it, and we feel your pain. But look, V5 is better, no doubt about it, and it's waiting for YOU. So come on, saddle that donkey, and come along! Many undiscovered plains of the internet are waiting for us. With V5 under your saddle, the journey will be safer, faster, more fun, and you’ll be able to tell the difference as soon as you hit that install button.

Update — 13.10.2020

After a few rounds of impassioned feedback from some of our most dedicated fans, we’ve decided to postpone our plans to retire HMA VPN v2 until we can migrate the features you loved from our v2 launch into our current v5. We’ll probably have this feature migration done by Q1 of 2021, and we’ll keep you posted with new developments.

Original post

We have some sad news for you today, so please, if you’re not seated, find the first empty chair/stranger’s lap you can find and brace yourself: we’re officially retiring HMA VPN v2

...have you recovered from the shock?

Look, we get it: this won’t mean much to most of you, since you’re all enjoying the speed and privacy of HMA VPN v5. But, there’s a small segment of our loyal audience who has been using some slightly out-of-date versions of HMA VPN.

How out of date are we talking? Well…

We’re not saying that the user interface is “hideous”, but even a panel of anglerfish thought it was unappealing. We wouldn’t call it “unintuitive”, but even Theseus wasn’t able to figure out how to navigate it. And we’d hesitate to call it “riddled with security vulnerabilities”, but Adobe Flash called and told us to get our crap together.

And that’s ultimately what it comes down to: we’re fine with people using the software they want to use, but HMA VPN v2 simply isn’t as secure and private as the v5 release. Not only does that make us look bad, it leaves our customers vulnerable, which is by far the more important issue. So we’re forcing their hands, and announcing that starting now, HMA VPN v2 simply won’t work.

Here’s the good news though: y'all can upgrade to the new and very much improved v5 of HMA VPN absolutely free. And if you needed a few reasons to upgrade…

  1. It works. Which is more than HMA VPN v2 can say right now.
  2. v5 comes with our new no-log policy, so what you do online will be a complete mystery to everyone, even us.
  3. Lightning Connect mode finds the fastest connection with the click of a button for convenient, powerful privacy.
  4. The Kill Switch feature ensures that network woes don’t result in you leaking valuable data.
  5. Split-Tunneling lets you determine which apps go protected online, and which get to go raw.
  6. It doesn’t look like it’s been beaten half to death with god’s ugly stick.

So how do I upgrade?

We’re so happy you asked, Mr. Man, first name Straw.

  • Step 1: Uninstall your old HMA VPN client. It’s just taking up space anyway. Feel free to play some farewell music if you think it would fit the mood.
  • Step 2: Re-download HMA VPN, and install that bad boy. Chances are Celine Dion will still be singing while this happens, but hopefully you’ve hit the 3:24 mark because that would be thematically appropriate.
  • Step 3: Log in with your old HMA account credentials, which should still work. Congratulations, you’re in business. If you’re not, we have a support team for exactly those kinds of situations.

That’s all!

We know HMA VPN’s v2 will be mourned by some. We feel it. But we truly think this is better for all parties involved, and we know that once you’ve tried our v5 release, you’ll agree.
