Ask questions, get answers, no distractions

This site is all about getting answers. It's not a discussion forum. There's no chit-chat.

Just questions...

...and answers.

Good answers are voted up and rise to the top.

The best answers show up first so that they are always easy to find.

The person who asked can mark one answer as "accepted".

Accepting doesn't mean it's the best answer, it just means that it worked for the person who asked.

Can Blender "un-smooth" a mesh?

When a mesh is smoothed, every selected vertex is moved towards the average position of its neighbors. Is there a way to do the opposite, given a mesh with bumps, curves and corners, to move selected vertices by small amounts opposite of what mesh smoothing would do?

If you're looking to make a model more low-poly, then try using the Decimate modifier.

An alternative method to reverse an operation is to add 2 shape keys, enter editmode with with a non-basis shape, edit the mesh (smooth it for example), exit editmode, then slide the shape key to a negative value you can then optionally apply it to the base mesh.


Get answers to practical, detailed questions

Focus on questions about an actual problem you have faced. Include details about what you have tried and exactly what you are trying to do.

Ask about...

  • Specific issues with Blender
  • General CG workflows in Blender
  • Real problems or questions that you’ve encountered

Not all questions work well in our format. Avoid questions that are primarily opinion-based, or that are likely to generate discussion rather than answers.

Questions that need improvement may be closed until someone fixes them.

Don't ask about...

  • Anything not directly related to Blender
  • Questions that are primarily opinion-based
  • Feature requests or possible bugs
  • Questions with many possible answers or that would need a very long answer
  • Questions about specific graphics-cards or hardware

Improve posts by editing or commenting
