I can't get my rear derailleur to downshift properly. Especially in the middle of the cassette it'll delay a bit before shifting.

Limits are set correctly.

Since I can't explain this properly I recorded a video

My only guess is it being slightly bent.

Likely you're cable's a hair to tight. Or the cable needs lubrication. Commented Mar 21, 2020 at 12:17
  • Just checking now that video is down, does "downshift" mean "from easier to harder" or "harder to easier"? The more likely problem is "easier to harder", which is usually called "upshift": reddit.com/r/cycling/comments/qsehc1/… Commented Jun 8 at 21:17

When downshifting the spring of the derailleur is pulling the chain off of the one gear. In contrast when upshifting the tension of the cable is causing the movement and there generally is much more force (tension on the cable). This is why upshifts typically happen faster.

If the downshift is accurate but slow then friction is usually to blame.

In addition to cleaning and lubricating the cable you can also try:

  1. Checking the B-screw to make sure the jockey pulley isn't too far from the cassette cogs.

  2. Turn the adjusting barrel clockwise (screw it in) a half turn. This will bias the rear derailleur towards the downshift. If you find the upshifts are getting slow or noisy then turn the adjusting barrel counter-clockwise a quarter turn.

  • Thanks for the suggestion for adjusting the B-Tension Putting it as close as possible made it a lot smoother Commented Mar 26, 2020 at 21:13
  • Still gotta go test it under load though Commented Mar 26, 2020 at 21:13
  • Yep, adjusting the B-Screw did the job Commented Apr 1, 2020 at 20:28
  • I think there's a bit of confusion between upshift and downshift (in OP question, my head, or community in general): reddit.com/r/cycling/comments/qsehc1/… Following the terminology of that Reddt, which I endorse, downshift should be the easy one. Unfortunately B-tension didn't save me this time :-( Commented Jun 8 at 21:15

This looks like a classic case of the cable sticking in the housing momentarily as the shifter lets out cable to downshift.

Your indexing looks fine as the chain is not rattling or trying to shift on it's own. FYI the derailleur high and low limits do not affect shifting or indexing.

Try removing the cable, wiping it down with a clean rag, applying a little chain lube and reinstalling. If that does not work replace the cable and housing. One cable and a length of housing is not expensive.

  • Thanks. I'll give this a try. (I thought I had turned on email notifications, apparently not though. Didn't see your answer till now) Commented Mar 26, 2020 at 13:23
