📣 This morning Ecommerce Europe launched its Manifesto for European Elections 2024. In this paper we present a way forward for the European Union to unlock the potential of the European economy and the digital commerce sector. We believe that by following our 7 key principles when regulating any aspect of the economy, we could ensure that the common objective of a green, digital and inclusive economy is fulfilled. These principles are: 📌 Channel-neutrality 📌 Harmonisation 📌 Level playing field 📌 Enforcement 📌 SME-proofing 📌 Designing for compliance 📌 Coherence and better regulation Where do we start? Ecommerce Europe puts forward concrete policy priorities for the new mandate, where we see clear potential for the European Union in the next 5 years: 👉 Closing the loop on the EU Circular Single Market 👉 Streamlining data requirements for business compliance and growth 👉 Leveraging digital tools to streamline and improve consumer information 👉  Partnering consumer fairness with economic growth 👉 Building an innovative and competitive retail payment landscape 👉 Ensuring a streamlined taxation policy and a seamless flow of goods Read our Manifesto here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dbiJcvKs #ecommerce #EUelections2024

📢 Ecommerce Europe, together with EACT - European Association of Corporate Treasurers, EuroCommerce, and Independent Retail Europe, united in expressing their concerns about the lack of competition in the European Payments landscape to the European Commission   💳 Together, we point to the dominant size and practices of large international card schemes and wallet providers. These practices hurt the #competitiveness of EU businesses, an impact that disproportionately affects smaller #merchants at a time when all efforts should be focused on tackling the cost of living issue of consumers.   📢 Together, we call on the new Commission to treat this issue as a #priority and take urgent action.   👇 Read more about our joint call for action here👇

The European Commission formally requested information today from online marketplaces #Temu and #Shein on measures taken to comply with online safety regulation Digital Services Act (#DSA). Temu and Shein were designated Very Large Online Platforms (#VLOPs) under the DSA, in May and April, respectively. As a result, they are under the Commission’s supervision and have to follow strict rules or risk fines. The Commission is asking for information on the platforms’ mechanisms through which users can flag illegal products, online interfaces which should not manipulate users, as well as minors protection, transparency of recommender systems, traceability of sellers, and compliance by design, according to its press release. Temu and Shein are required to respond by 12 July. A Shein spokesperson confirmed to Euractiv that the company had received the request for information, and said they will work with the executive to ensure compliance. Temu also told Euractiv that they will cooperate with the EU and are “fully committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations in the markets” where they operate.

Today, Ecommerce Europe and many of its national association members issued an Open Letter to decision-makers, enforcement authorities and stakeholders in general, both at EU and national level, stressing the urgent need to ensure a level playing field and effective enforcement of EU law towards all e-commerce players active in the EU Single Market. Considering the very fast growth of some of these players, the co-signatories of the letter urge decision-makers at EU and national level to act as swiftly as possible to: 📌 Ensure all necessary means to scrutinise the activities of non-EU based actors as thoroughly as for companies already established and operating in the EU. 📌 If issues were to be identified, competent authorities should sanction non-compliant players with the same determination that is applied to EU-based players in case of infringements. 📌 Promote and facilitate deeper cooperation and coordination among EU Members States and their authorities. Team Leader at European Commission

Today the European Commission published a report taking stock of the first 2 years of application of the EU consumer law Modernisation Directive (so-called 'Omnibus'): https://lnkd.in/e_wJknQC The report tackles topics such as price reductions, online consumer reviews, remedies for victims of unfair commercial practices, penalties for consumer law breaches, personalised pricing, transparency in search ranking etc. While the short reporting period does not allow to draw definitive conclusions, these recent legal changes have introduced positive effects on the EU market and reinforced the overall consumer protection framework. This report complements the ongoing Fitness Check of EU consumer law on digital fairness, which assesses in a broader manner the adequacy of the existing consumer protection framework in the digital area (report foreseen in autumn 2024).
