ScienceOpen Collections
ScienceOpen Collections provide community space for the curation, distribution and evaluation of scholarly information. They are thematic groups of preprints and peer-reviewed research papers drawn from a variety of publishers and journals. Collections are a way of promoting own research and putting it in context of other publications. To build your own, apply for collection editor status here. What is a Collection?
- ScienceOpen Collections are thematic groups of research articles that transcend journals and publishers to transform how we collate and build upon scientific knowledge.
- The major aim of ScienceOpen Collections is to provide a community space for the creation, distribution and evaluation of scholarly information.
- ScienceOpen Collections provide editorial management and quality assurance for themed groups of articles drawn from across a huge range of publishers and journals.
- Collections are compiled and maintained by a Collection Editor.
What does a Collection Editor do?
- Selects relevant articles on a specific topic from different journals to be incorporated into a single collection.
- Writes a brief comment on articles that highlight its research importance and major contributions to the collection.
- Writes an editorial piece describing the scope of the collection.
- Encourages discussion of the articles through our post-publication peer review system and sharing of the collection content to colleagues, students, and other interested parties
How to create a Collection
- To apply for the role of Collection Editor please send a short email outlining your interest to Nina Tscheke or to the ScienceOpen Editorial Office (Editorial@ScienceOpen.com).
- Identify an area of interest and choose a collection topic.
- Choose an Editorial team. You may run a collection alone, or consider this as a mentoring opportunity. Editorial teams which are a mixture of early career and senior scientists are a great way to share knowledge and ensure continuity. A complete ScienceOpen profile for each Editor is required.
- Create a new ScienceOpen Collection in your workspace and customize its landing page.
- Populate your Collection with content from the ScienceOpen platform. ScienceOpen has aggregated over 86 million articles and article records – any of this can be added to a Collection from the ScienceOpen search results. Are there articles missing on our platform you would like to include in your collection? Just sign into My ScienceOpen, go to your private Dashboard and request them by submitting a list of DOIs, DOAJ or PubMed IDs.
- Review and comment the most significant papers. You can add brief, structured remarks of one or two sentences, explaining why this paper is particularly important for your research community. These will be key in kick-starting discussions around research papers.
- Activate your community! Invite and involve your network. Collections are based on community involvement, and the benefits that a structured and open discussion can have to the research process. You can invite any of your colleagues to review any article within your collection using our ‘Invite to Review’ function.
- Update your Collection. New content is integrated to ScienceOpen on a daily basis. Using the “Save Search” functionality on ScienceOpen may alert you to new relevant content in your field via email, which can then be easily added to your Collection.
- Collections increase the outreach of your social media channels and facilitate other scientific communication activities, such as hosting discussions on hot topics in the field, Q&As with community leaders, or webinars.
- The Collections are actively promoted by ScienceOpen. Additionally, Editors are encouraged to contact authors whose papers are highlighted in the Collection.
