Education: M.Sc. in Computer Science
Profession: I started out my professional career as a developer mainly programming network protocol stacks for embedded systems for a couple of years, but switched to the dark side (IT) ;-) back in 1999 and was filling the positions as a devop long before it was called that. I've been in IT ever since mainly focusing on Linux (and Unix), Networking and Network Security.
Expirence: I've been using Linux since 1995, and ever since I managed to fix the broken installation scripts and dependencies of the 0.93r4 release of Debian it has been my preferred distribution.
I've done most things within the field of IT, everything from automating installations of desktops to setting up fiber-channel and iSCSI SANs, huge CEPH installations, virtualization at various different levels, from running single VMs in VirtualBox via home-brewed QEMU/KVM datacenter setups and large on-prem VMware, Xen, OpenStack, etc to cloud solutions in AWS & GCP.
Even so I'm specialized on the network side and have developed, setup and operated a multitude of different network environments, everything from getting a home-users local AP to integrate with his LAN routing out split tunnel to different WANs via WireGuard to setting up and securing international WANs with hundred of sites over MPLS, back in the days, to now doing it using IPSec tunnels BGP and NextGen Firewalls. I've used both enterprise products and home-brewed solutions based on Linux networking, which is most fun to work with since it allows the developer in me to create the "perfect" solutions allowing the designs to be exactly as they should :-)
