Airplane mode is a common setting available on laptops and other mobile devices that disables their signal transmitting capabilities, including cellular, WiFi and Bluetooth communication.

There are two main reasons cited for enabling airplane mode during flight:

  1. Most airlines' regulations prohibit the use of transmitting devices during the flight, or at least during takeoff and touchdown.
  2. Disabling signal transmission preserves battery life, thus increasing the chance the device will be usable throughout a long flight.
