Assuming Thunderbolt 3 to the docking station and either Thunderbolt 3 or DisplayPort (1.2 or higher) to the display, does G-Sync pass through a docking station, or does the intermediary hardware prevent G-Sync from working?

No, it doesn't work.

I tried this with my Alienware 13r3, Acer Predator XB241H and a CalDigit TS3 Lite.

144hz 1080p is no problem, but it's impossible to get G-Sync to work through the Dock.

G-Sync works with DP-Port on the laptop itself, but I have to use 3 cables, which is a bummer.

  • I can confirm this with Precision 7560, RTX A4000, WD19DCS dock.

I am using a MSI Vortex G25 and a 240w Dock from Dell. And I would say the answer is: it depends.

I tried to use the DP port and the mini DP on the dock but it won't work. However, I recently bought a new USB-C to DisplayPort cable and connected is to the dock. BOOM! G-Sync notification pop up from the corn of my screen.

  • To be clear: It does not work through an USB-C docking station. However, if you simply connect a screen via Display port to your systems USB-C port it works which is kind of no surprise.

  • From what I understand, he connected the cable to the dock. I could imagine this might work if the USB-C signal is kind of passed through. I tried the same with my cheap dock and it didn't work though. It might work with certain docks, but it needs to be confirmed. @Muyu Zhan can you confirm it that your USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable is connected to the Dell Dock and G-Sync worked with that configuration?

It does work indeed!

I tested this with two different docks (see below) and it works. I believe it works with all actual Thunderbolt docks, i.e. Thunderbolt input and output. Most cheap Thunderbolt docks only have Thunderbolt input, but standard USB 3.1 output, which does not work.

It might also not work with the DisplayPort outputs of any dock. These are all just assumptions though and are not confirmed. I can confirm though that it works with the specific setup below.

This is my setup for reference:

  • Notebook: Tuxedo InfinityBook Pro 16
  • OS: Tuxedo OS 2 (based on Kubuntu 22.04.4)
  • Driver: Nvidia 550.67 with the following settings:
    • X Server Display Configuration
      • Advanced settings for external Display
        • CHECKED: Allow G-SYNC on monitor not validated as G-SYNC Compatible
    • OpenGL Settings
      • CHECKED: Allow G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible
      • CHECKED: G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible Visual Indicator
  • Monitor: Dell G2724D
  • Docks (both worked!):
  • Connections:
    • Notebook to dock: Thunderbolt 4 cable
    • Dock to monitor: Thunderbolt (dock-side) to DisplayPort (monitor-side) (original Dell cable)
