It's an excellent revision of Samus's original adventure. Much closer to Super Metroid than Metroid Fusion, it retains the Metroidvania style very well, and the progression feels very smooth.

I typically am not a fan of remakes on video games, but there are certainly exceptions. This remake of the original Metroid takes the game that started a series and makes it, well, playable. It also makes it quite a bit better. I recently completed the original Metroid and had to use a guide to get through it. The winding caverns were fine for the mid-80s, but now when you have so many games that you could be playing instead, you need a game that doesn’t waste your time. I love that this remake did way more than just remake the original…tons of quality-of-life additions, additional story beats and areas; this is a remake of an NES game done right.
If you’d like to get into the Metroid series, this is a great place to start. While the NES version has its merits, it’s a relic best left in the past.

I felt very nostalgic playing this on Switch. The gameplay, the soundtrack and the level designs are all top-notch. It’s truly one of the best Gameboy Advance games of all time.

This is Nintendo's superior remake of the first game in the series. I would rather play and replay this game than the original NES version, which I have also played and beaten in the 80's and 90's and very early 2000's.

Makes the first Metroid more accessible than ever. The assignment was not missed on this one. Lacks a bit of the mood and grandness of Super, but an awesome time nonetheless.

Just an excellent game, it’s aged incredibly well. Don’t be afraid to use a guide if you get lost.

Original Miiverse review (RIP):
"Man, this was such a great game. I may actually give the NES Metroid a better shot now. This compares very similarly to Super Metroid, just another solid Metroid game here. 9/10"
2023 me: Yeah I tried the OG NES Metroid and it's just so effin hard I don't have the patience for it when there are more fun Metroid games to play okay???

Metroid: Zero Mission is a solid entry into the handheld series from the main console titles. The level design and art style keeps true to the original games, while still adding a more modern and improved look. The puzzles are challenging enough, the enemies are fun to fight and evade, and the boss fights are diverse and will keep you on your toes!

Played through with Nintendo Online + Expansion with GameBoy Advance games. Missed out on this one back when GBA was big. Really enjoyed most of the game all through the end. Believe I got stuck once or twice but for the most part the game was good about giving you a general idea of where you need to go next. It was never straight-forward to get there but at least you knew you were working the right way.
I’m still not a big fan of the way some secrets have nothing to really clue you in sometimes. Most of the time you will see something like a crack in the wall or an unusual opening in the floor that gives you a hint, but not always. One area I missed and was a bit of a cheap trick was fake lava areas. If u jumped in the lava it just magically disappears and you fall into a new area. This happens in a couple of areas and I just don’t get it design wise. How would a player know to do this? It’s counterintuitive.
That aside, this remake of the original Metroid looks and plays great. The controls feel great also. I especially like using the SNES controller for GBA games like this. Also, there are some really awesome pixel-drawn cinematics that look very cool.
