Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship

Providing Foundational, Individualized Training in Clinical Neurophysiology

The Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is a yearlong training opportunity for physicians seeking a solid foundation in the subspecialty of clinical neurophysiology. The program’s 13 block curriculum is built with a strong focus on electromyography/neuromuscular medicine and electroencephalography/epilepsy. Additional experiences include sleep medicine, pediatric epilepsy, nerve/muscle biopsy and autonomic testing. The program offers two Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved positions each year and applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service in conjunction with the National Resident Matching Program.

The partnership between Dell Med and Ascension Seton provides trainees with a large and diverse patient base, opportunity for collaboration with over 30 other fellowships, and numerous research and academic growth opportunities. The curriculum is individualized towards each fellow’s clinical interests while also containing a comprehensive didactic schedule to prepare for ABPN boards. With a focused mission to effectively serve the rapidly growing population of Central Texas, the program’s foundational training ensures that fellows advance their skills to become not only excellent clinicians but also leaders in transforming health care.

The Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship is affiliated with Dell Med’s Department of Neurology.

Training Facilities

Clinical neurophysiology fellows train with a variety of faculty at the sites listed below. Exposure to a range of patients in a variety of clinical settings allows trainees to maximize their learning experience.

Ascension Seton Brain Spine Institute.

Ascension Medical Group Seton Neurology houses outpatient clinics for EMG and EEG patients. During EMG months, fellows work under the supervision of EMG and neuromuscular attending physicians to perform nerve conduction and EMG studies. During EEG months, fellows work under the supervision of epilepsy faculty reading EEGs, LTMs and learning how to manage patients with epilepsy in the outpatient setting.

Dell Seton Medical Center at UT Austin.

Dell Seton Medical Center — Dell Med’s primary teaching hospital — was built in 2017 by Ascension Seton. As Austin’s only urban Level I Trauma Center, it serves a diverse population and is the main site for fellows to gain inpatient EMU experience.

Ascension Seton Medical Center.

Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin is a top-rated medical and surgical magnet hospital focused on providing excellent care to the Central Texas community. It features inpatient neurology and stroke consultation services.

Health Transformation Building.

The Health Transformation Building, located on the UT Austin campus, houses clinics for many of our training subspecialties. CNP fellows staff the 8th floor HTB Neurology clinic one half-day per week during their EMG rotations. This clinic serves a range of patients from the Austin community, including those who are traditionally underserved and uninsured.
