I started out in the 80s with an external frame, 6 pound Kelty that was absolutely bomb-proof.
My load out was probably around 60 pounds back then. The idea of ultralight gear hadn't really been conceived of yet. The focus was on durability.
In the 90s I upgraded to an internal framed NF pack. It had about a 90 liter capacity and weighed about a pound less than my Kelty.
It was/is a great pack and I still use it for winter backpacking.
As I have gotten older though, I've found that I just don't enjoy carrying that heavy of a load anymore.
A few years ago I transitioned to a 60 liter Granite Gear pack that weighs just over 2lbs. That's been a good pack for me, but as I have started refining my load out with more lightweight and compact gear, I found that the 60 liter size is just too big...there was lots of extra room in my pack, dead space. Further, while my base weight is sub 20 lbs, on longer trips I often find myself carrying around 30-35lbs with food and water. Especially when hiking in drier areas and having to carry more water.
I ordered this Osprey 44 liter and couldn't be happier.
At 3.6lbs, it's heavier than my GG pack, but with the improved suspension system will handle those heavier loads more comfortably.
44 liters, for me anyway, is a pretty sweet spot, volume-wise.
I can easily carry everything I need for up to about 5 days in the woods with no extra space in my pack.
I'm not a huge fan of rain covers for a backpack, I tend to put anything that I don't want to get wet in a heavy duty compactor bag inside my pack. I have found that in really heavy rain, a rain cover will actually gather and hold water in the bottom of it. This pack has an included, permanently attached rain cover which I rarely use. It's a nice feature, if you're into that kind of thing but I'll probably end up cutting it out to reduce the overall pack weight. Save an ounce or two.
The pockets are very well thought out. I really enjoy a breathable kangaroo style pocket on the back of the pack, which this one doesn't have, but it does have an expandable zippered pocket back there which actually holds quite a bit of stuff.
There are side access zippers on the side of the pack which will let you access stuff inside the pack without doing a 'gear dump' on the trail, but they're kind of small and not really all that useful. Not for me anyway, but YMMV.
I find that if I pack my gear in the order I'll use it, it's pretty easy to access what I need, when I need it.
There is a bottom compartment with a floating top, just underneath the main compartment. It has its own external zipper. I put stuff in there that I may need to get to, but don't always use. I.e.- rain gear, bug head net, 1st aid kit, etc. Due to the floating top, it keeps that gear separate and out of the way, but easy to get to.
The top lid, or 'brain' is permanently attached. It has a couple of pockets, one on the inside with a key-clip, this is where I store my wallet and car keys while hiking. The other, exterior pocket is super handy for my poop-kit and other things I might want to get to while taking a break on the trail.
Overall this an extremely comfortable and well thought out pack.
I can see it providing many, many years of reliable service.
Very highly recommended.
The CONS:
This being a 44l pack, it was just barely large enough for a 1 night overnight. But, no more. It does however makes for a very large DAY pack.
I had to ditch my water bladder because it took up too much room internally when I packed it for a one-nighter.
The side hip belt pockets are just big enough to hold a cell phone but they take two hands to operate. Even at that, I had a hard time reaching them.
The side mesh for water bottles are quite large BUT no human can reach a water bottle when you're wearing the pack. Hiking alone, I had to take the pack off everytime I wanted water. (This would have not been an issue if I could have used my hydration bladder.)
The bottom compartment will not hold a sleeping bag even when compressed. Unless you have a very lightweight down bag that really compresses down.
The front zip compartment is useless for anything other than maps.
The PROs
Osprey has had a reputation for top of the line products and they did not disappoint with this one.
The suspension system has an adjustment range that is easy to adjust on the fly and is effective when getting the proper weight distribution.
The hip belt and the shoulder straps are well padded.
The chest strap is easily and widely adjustable.
Plenty of compression straps at every point they are needed.
Zippers are robust and easily operated.
The integrated rain cover is a plus.
All this being said, I returned this pack and turned around and ordered a larger one from Osprey.
