    Wanted to Love This But…

    Wanted to Love This But…
I bought the Nebula Solar Portable for daily use. I felt that a high quality projector would fit my lifestyle better than an actual TV, as I live in a small, 3rd floor apt and travel on a weekly basis.I’ll start with the positive feedback. I am very impressed by the brightness. 400 ANSI lumen vs 100 (I also own the Capsule) makes a tremendous difference. I am able to watch comfortably, during daylight hours, in my living room which only has wood blinds. My point being that you don’t need a blacked out room to use the Solar. Most colors appear quite rich to me, even during the day.My primary reason for purchasing the Solar is the quadrilateral keystone correction. It was getting old having to ensure my Capsule was perfectly perpendicular to the wall which leads to a mess of cords everywhere. I wanted a clean look in my living room since this is replacing my want for a TV. I am very happy with this feature when it works (more on my gripes later). I have the unit sitting on a corner shelf next to my couch and I am able to perfectly center the image over my credenza. Now for some negative feedback. Blues and cooler tones do appear to be washed out at times, even in a pitch black room. This is not a dealbreaker for me. I am projecting directly onto very light grey walls so I’m sure this is a contributing factor. Maybe someday I will splurge on the screen. For now, this works! Its best feature is also its most frustrating. I didn’t realize when I bought this that the quadrilateral correction is not automatic. I don’t feel like this was advertised clearly. Now it does correct automatically in the vertical plane, but so does my Capsule. The manual adjustment is not difficult, so once again, this con is not a dealbreaker. However, every time the unit is turned off, your adjustment settings are reset. THIS might be a dealbreaker. Since I’m trying to use this almost daily, it’s incredibly frustrating that there isn’t a way to save your settings so that the unit is ready to go when turned on after having remained in the same spot.Another gripe is the fact that even while plugged in with the provided Anker charging cable and USB-C, the unit appears to consume power at a rate that exceeds the charger’s ability to replenish it. So after about 2-3 hours of continuous use, it will die and have to be left off and allowed to charge back up. This makes no sense to me since the advertised battery life in standard mode is 2 hours. So I can’t charge and use the unit at the same time?! With my capsule, I have never had an issue playing and charging simultaneously so this was is a very surprising flaw in the Solar and is another reason I might return it.In summary, I went into this purchase with the expectation that a projector in this price range will never exceed the picture quality and true-to-life color pallet of a modern UHD TV. With that in mind, this little guy has surpassed my expectations. At night, I honestly forget that it is a projector sometimes. I don’t miss having a TV and I don’t find myself longing for better picture quality. Embedded speakers on a unit like this will never provide the same experience as a theater system, but they’re not bad at all. I will eventually get a soundbar if I keep this thing. As for the charging/battery issue- I recognize that I purchased the portable version and that there is a stationery version which would eliminate this issue. I went portable because I travel so frequently and will often make use of the battery feature. At a price point $80 higher, this thing should be able to do everything the stationery version does + more right? Especially since older units can play and charge at the same time.I own a ton of Anker products from charging cables to powerbanks and I love them all for their quality and longevity. I have had the Nebula Capsule for nearly 4 years and have been very happy with it, hence this upgrade. I my impression of Anker products is that their design is well thought out and detail oriented. This is why the 2 major flaws I have addressed are so surprising to me. I am currently on the fence about whether or not I’ll keep this thing. I’m not sure it’s enough of an upgrade from my old Capsule to justify.**the photo is an example of ~110” projection from a distance of 11ft and an angle of about 15 degrees during daylight hours.

First time projector buyer so this will be from a newbie's perspective. So far very impressed. The size of the projector is very portable. Not soda can portable, but reminds me of a mini-PC or Mac Mini. Can easily mount to a Joby Gorillapod (DSLR) or regular triped. It includes an Anker PowerPort III 65W as the charger and a 3-meter USB-C cable that I assume is also Anker so it should be high quality. The autofocus and keystone adjustability is really nice and quick and the picture quality is very clear even on a non-white wall (ours is a light eggshell color). I don't have a complete blacked out room/home theater but nightime viewing against a wall is very impressive and bright, and totally sufficient for movie nights. I would imagine a proper screen would improve things even more.

Immediately updated firmware after initial setup. While it doesn't have fully native Netflix from the Google Play store, the Solar has a built in app called Nebula Manager that you can use to sideload Netflix and get most of the functionality of a native app. The only downside I've experienced to this solution is that you can't get a Netflix favorite to display on the Android TV homescreen (or their recommendations ribbon) and the Netflix app is best controlled by the Nebula Connect app on your phone (connected to the projector through bluetooth). When using the sideloaded Netflix app, you can't pause/resume the video with the remote control, but the phone/app controls work fine to engage pause/resume. Otherwise seems to tick all boxes. I've installed and tried out Amazon Video, Disney+, Vudu, Hulu, HBO Max, Movies Anywhere, Shotime Anywhere, FandangoNow, and Plex and they all install normally through the Google Play store onto Android TV. Chromecasting works well for everything except Netflix. The Nebula Manager app for AirPlay, AirPin(PRO), seemed to work fine for generic mirroring of an iPhone display but conked out when trying to play protected videos as well (i.e. Netflix).

    Pros:
    True HD
USB-C power input so easy portable charging with a 65W battery pack
Anker PowerPort III 65W charger ($40 value and multi-use)
Netflix compatible-ish without having to plug in Chromecast/Fire Stick/Roku

    Cons:
Bluetooth audio only allows for 1 connection at a time, so an external speaker is ok but 2 simultaneous headsets won't work.
(Updated 3/31/23) - Nebula now sells a compatible carrying case. A bit expensive but does the job to securely store the projector, charging block, cables, and remote) No Carrying Case and Nebula doesn't sell an official one yet like they do for the Capsule and Mars. Need to store in box until I find a proper storage solution
Would be nice to have a lens cover/protector
Netflix controls are limited with remote, need to use phone/Nebula app for complete controls
Play/Pause buttons on the remote would have been nice, or ability to switch to mouse controls on remote to resolve Netflix constraint

Overall, very pleased with the overall quality and excited to use this more. Seems like an excellent all-in-one system for movie watching, especially if you have a solid wifi signal. Also have had good experience with Anker products and customer support in the past so I feel a little more confident with this purchase and their warranty coverage.

Sound is also pretty good and it has a little adjustable stand under it to change the height of the picture.

My very first experience with this was bad. It arrived with the battery so low that even after plugging it in, it would shutoff within seconds of turning on. That doesn't bode well for this device -- it suggests that the device cannot get power directly from the plug and will always be cycling through the battery. Yikes. After 20 or 30 minutes of that initial charge, it finally was able to boot up and once it got some updates, it looked decent enough.

Autofocus & auto-keystone: I knew before purchasing that this didn't have fully automatic keystone correction, but it's still a bummer to do it manually any time you need to project from the left or right of your screen/surface. Autofocus works well enough for me.

Battery: You can choose between two brightness modes and your choice will dramatically effect how long the battery lasts. In my testing, it seems to be a bit worse than the manufacturer-provided numbers. A warning: the OS doesn't make it obvious that pressing the power button puts the device into a standby mode which uses the battery. To fully shut it down, you need to hold the power button and select "Shut down" from a menu."

Remote: Terrible. Bad organization. No backlighting. Very little tactile feedback. Unnecessarily tall. Ugh.

HDMI: I haven't had reason to test video over the HDMI port, though I guess it supports ARC, because I was able to use it to connect a soundbar and the projector automatically sent audio to the soundbar.

Games: I haven't tested gaming via HDMI. There are very few decent games available in the Google Play store, but I was shocked how well Crashlands (one of my all-time favs) works. Using an 8bit Pro 2 controller via bluetooth, I don't notice any lag. I wasn't expecting this to work at all, but it was a lot of fun. Too bad there's such a limited game selection, at least for this version of Android.

Brightness: If you're even considering this projector, hopefully you're already aware that it is not bright. You'll want to board up all the windows if watching anything serious. There's a noticeable difference in the brightness between the two power modes (though you can choose either mode whether you're plugged in or using battery).

Noise: If you keep the projector in the less-bright "battery" power mode (whether plugged in or running on battery), the fan stays passably quiet; however, once you put it into the normal brightness mode, the fan gets way too loud. YOU WILL BE ANNOYED BY THE FAN NOISE ... unless you use a big speaker system & keep the volume really high or unless you have the projector mounted on a very high ceiling. For quiet watching or game-playing at night, the fan noise makes the projector unusable. Honestly, the loudness of the fan is the thing I hate most about this projector.

Built-in video apps: Of course you could plug a Roku or Fire stick into this projector, but using the built-in AndroidTV OS, I was able to install and test YouTube, Amazon, Paramount+, Hulu, Disney+, and VLC.

    * YouTube & Disney+ have worked fine from the beginning.
    * Amazon worked for a while but suddenly one day the audio started being slightly delayed from the video... very annoying and reboots don't seem to fix it.
    * Paramount+ worked for a while but hangs indefinitely on the loading screen now.
    * Hulu loads and I can browse shows, but trying to play anything leads to an error or a never-ending loop of the 5-sec Hulu logo intro clip.
    * VLC worked great to browse & watch watch videos from a USB-C flash drive (via a USB-C to USB-A adapter).

As explained elsewhere, Netflix merits special mention. The makers of the projector go out of their way to make it easy for you to effectively side-load it through another application that they provide... and it kinda works, but the remote can't control it. To control Netflix, you have to install their "Nebula Connect" app on a smartphone, get it to pair with your projector (and stay paired), and then you have to use your phone screen kind of like a mouse pad to move a cursor around the projected screen (all to tap buttons in the Netflix interface). I jumped through those hoops and was satisfied with it at first, but after a week, the Nebula Connect app stopped being able to connect to the projector and now after removing it, the app can no longer see the projector. .... So no more Netflix.

That and all the other video app issues (plus lack of games) are probably caused by the very old version of AndroidTV this projector is running -- AndroidTV Pie 9.2.

All around, I'm quite disappointed and would not recommend this projector, even for the half-off price at which I purchased it. If Anker had kept the OS updated and designed it to have more efficient passive cooling, it could be a nice product, even given the limited brightness .... but as it stands now, you shouldn't spend more than 100 usd for something like this. (And even then, you'll be very disappointed with the fan noise.)

This is a great projector. It auto adjusts and has a very clear picture. The two things I wish were better was how long it plays unplugged and the sound. The sound quality is good but it’s not very loud so we had to buy a wireless speaker. The projector also only plays off of the battery for three (3) hours. Otherwise it’s a great projector.

Small size with centered tripod mount. Nice built quality including remote.
Good battery life, 1.5 hrs at max and 3 hrs at 50% of 400 ANSI lumens.
    Auto Focus works great.
Android Pie with Google TV and Chromecast work seamless and responsive.
Samsung Dex works great with USB C to HDMI cable and Bluetooth keyboard connected.
Picture quality is convincing and text readable. Sound is acceptable even for movie watching, no distortion.
    USB C charging port.
Even if the unit is several years old, it beats all the others I've tried.
    Also ordered matching carry case.

This is the best projector I've ever owned. I've been looking for portable Full HD projector for a while and finally found one! I'm really happy with the Android TV OS and great picture quality. Paired with travel case and USB-C PD powerbank it's a great combo to bring it camping over the weekend.
The only issue I had that after about 2 months of use one day it turned on out of the blue, I saw nebula logo and it turned off. After that the projector was dead - didn't turn on and had no life symptoms no matter what. Maybe that was failed attempt to auto-update? Anyways Anker support was excellent and replaced it with minimal hassle! Hope this one won't die after another two months!
Update: The replacement projector worked perfectly fine for about 4 months and one day after turning it on there was a continuous broken sound and I had to force it to shut down. After restart projector turned on and worked fine except there were two small white dots on the top and bottom of the screen. Again, Anker support was excellent and sent me a replacement. Hope this one won't have any issue anymore. I'm still loving it and take it camping (or should I say glamping?) almost all the time.

This is a well built projector that has had a lot of thought put into its design and engineering. Purchased for trips to the cabin or viewing films outside at night. Few other options provide all aspects like speakers and battery and smartTV functions like this. Picture quality is quite good, focus and legibility of text is solid across the screen including the corners.

If I could find one flaw I would say the picture contrast is only good not amazing, it may be improved if I use a higher quality projection screen though. There are brighter options out there also but for dark room or nighttime viewing this is very sufficient.

4.0 out of 5 stars Netflix Integration??

Sound is good. Picture is bright. Autofocus is a Disaster though. It focuses every 10 to 15 seconds, which stops the stream... often to the poi t of having to re start the show or film. Workaround is to focus, then turn auto focus off.

A direct connection for Audio out would have been nice as well. It sounds okay, but the sound is from Behind you, where the projector is - and installing / connecting to Blue tooth speakers is a bit of a pain.

Shame that Netflix is a separately installed app the way they do it. First world problems, but - Hopefully that will change in a firmware upgrade?

1.0 out of 5 stars Washed Out Colors - Dim Output - Very Disappointed

Washed Out Colors - Dim Output - Inconsistent Fan - Not Very Small

I bought this to be an upgrade to my AAXA M6, I do some small home theatre reviews on youtube but the M6 beats this in almost every aspect except for OS functionality, here is why:

    Washed out colors:
I was very disappointed in the washed out colors, the colors seemed very unsaturated compared to my AAXA M6. I am running shipping firmware. I tried all available menus and picture options, inputs and could not seem to resolve the issue. I am not sure if maybe it’s just my unit or a firmware bug maybe?

    Dim output:
As you can see from my pic the brightness output is very low even in the dark light conditions i’m using it in. My M6 is almost twice as bright for some reason even though it is not rated as high using standardized ANSI lumens.

    Fan issues:
There has to be some sort of firmware fan issues as the fan is constantly turning off and then on when it auto mode, even when changing the modes it does not seem to make a difference to the fan. It makes this very annoying during movies as on high the fan is very audible.

    Size:
The projector is not large by any means but not as small as some other mini 1080P units.

    UPDATE: REMOTE ISSUES FIXED
    Remote issues:
Also when I first unboxed and paired the remote for the first time I was having issues with button presses being recognized all the time. I was able to fix this however by removing and repairing the remote.

I was disappointed and will be returning the product. I have purchased many things from Anker and usually their products are top notch so this one might be a one off.
