So once I find something I like, I tend to stick with it. PLUSes: +Aloe Jelly!!! ...btw, that's the only thing I order. I'm over the boba phase. +Fresh milk tea means FRESH whole milk vs. creamer. You choose. +Not overly sweet... I usually like to drink it after the ice has melted. No diabetes for me, please. +Loyalty stamp card!!! Yesssss!!! ...the 11th one is FREE! +BIG 'ol cup sizes that won't fit in ur cup holder!!! Complaints of being TOO big? [cuz that's what she said!] Seriously... just be thankful they ain't stingy. MINUSes: -Super LONG line -Annoying HS students -Metered parking sucks CONVENIENCE: *** [Currently ONLY one location... in the Richmond dist., but soon to open a Berkeley spot... E X C I T E D !] AMBIANCE: **** [Clean, brightly-lit... can get crowded with people.] SERVICE: **** [Friendly service, but slow... IJDGI.] PRICE: $ [$3.09+ tax, $0.50 per topping] OVERALL: **** [4-stars... cuz with a few peeps waiting out the door, you're looking at a 45-min wait... COULD there really be a bakery that sells "WORLD'S BEST" egg tart? Well, like Elf the movie... [Lily walks into Golden Gate Bakery and shouts] "YOU DID IT!!! ...Congratulations! ...World's BEST Egg Tart! Great job!" The only difference? ...these really are World's Best Egg Tart!!! Here's why... FOOD & TASTE: "Dan Tat" ...aka Egg Tarts ...aka The B E S T Egg Tarts in the city! ...so WHY are they so delicious? First, they are pipping hot!!! Warning... wait a minute or two to allow cooling... I once scalded my tongue. Second, they are fluffy!!! Like a heaven of egg pillows... intact jiggly outside, silky soft inside. :-9 Lastly, the crust is flaky!!! ...crispy, buttery, gets all over the place. Yes... egg tart get in my face! :-9 CONVENIENCE: * [Yup... that's right, just 1-star... cuz being located in CT, where it's really out of the way, where I have to deal with driving through massive amounts of people... and where I have to PAY for parking in a lot... and then, suddenly disappointed cuz I find a "CLOSED on vacation" sign taped on the door... AGAIN! AMBIANCE: *** [Crowded little hole in the wall... Take out only... No seating available.] SERVICE: **** [Fast service... but be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes in a line that wraps around the block... j/k, I mean store.] PRICE: $ [$1.35 for a SUPER HOT egg tart.] OVERALL: **** [4-stars... cuz my chances are 3/5 on scoring an egg tart whenever I visit this tiny shop. Here are the "yays" & "nays" YAYs: -Eggettes in various flavors (Regular, Chocolate, & Honeydew) -Aloe jelly topping for $0.50 extra -FREE wifi & TV! -(practically) NO waiting, if visiting during non-school hours NAYs: -Almond milk tea... too sweet, kinda gritty -NO plastic sealed top makes difficult to save drink for later -Can get super stuffy & HOT inside on warm days CONVENIENCE: **** [Non-metered street parking w/ 1-hr. limit or park in residential] AMBIANCE: *** [Brightly lit, filled with students during non-school hours] SERVICE: *** [Fast, but nothing spectacular. May encounter worker speaking limited English] PRICE: $ [Approx. $3 per menu item] OVERALL: *** [3-stars... come here for the "eggettes" only, after all... it ain't called Eggettes for nuthin!] Nuff said. Bread overload... too dry even with gelato and fruit.] CONVENIENCE: *** [Local neighborhood, ample parking, but CASH only.] AMBIANCE: **** [Dessert served in a cafe with an art gallery for local artists in the backroom. Japanese artwork adorn the walls.] SERVICE: *** [Female employees dressed in French maid's outfit. PRICE: $ [Under $10] OVERALL: **/* [2.5 stars... Plenty of other Asian dessert spots located in SF... the only thing Akiba's got going for them is the art gallery.] Nuff said. [#4 of 100 YELP CHALLENGE 2013] -

I was intrigued that they had a plethora of milk teas and Asian drinks... but then... as I looked at their menu, their food and dessert options are limited. FOOD: Ham, Egg, & Macaroni soup Ginger "Dun Dan" (Steamed Egg Custard, ginger flavored) Mango Tapioca TASTE: -Ham, Egg, & Macaroni soup... TOO SALTY! ...couldn't finish. :-( ...and the pasta was wayyy overcooked. Meh. -Ginger "Dun Dan" (Steamed Egg Custard, ginger flavored)... TOO eggy! :-( Sure, the flavor was nice... but Dun Dan steamed perfectly should have a light & fluffy consistency. Steamed too long and it turns out rubbery & eggy. -Mango Tapioca... well, u really can't screw this one up. CONVENIENCE: *** [Open LATE, till midnite or 2am, depends on the day.] AMBIANCE: ** [Wooden chairs are not comfortable. SERVICE: **** [Sure... the gal was fast and friendly, but too bad the food really sucks.] PRICE: $ [Most items are under $5, total bill was under $20.] OVERALL: ** [2-stars... only cuz the service was decent and it's open late.] There are plenty of other Asian cafes/dessert restos around... also open late... with MORE food options... and now I know, I'd be better off going to those places instead. It was nice and warm, chocolate milk cream filled inside, but really wasn't impressed at all. My dining companions opted for some gelato ($3.50), which they said was just okay. CONVENIENCE: ** [San Mateo downtown area, metered parking available, small location, somewhat difficult to notice.] AMBIANCE: **** [Clean atmosphere, bright white walls, aromas of freshly baked bread.] SERVICE: *** [Fast & efficient... employees didn't seem very happy working there.] PRICE: $ [$1.95 for Roti bun, $3.50 and up for gelato.] OVERALL: ** [Not worth the drive if I'm gonna eat something that tastes like an overpriced Chinese cocktail bun.] Nuff said. A few improvements with this location: -Shorter wait times... 10-15 mins vs. 1-hr or longer wait -Clear drink menu on the wall vs. Flimsy laminated worn out menus -Option to order less sugar... vs. Before I would order my drink and let the ice melt before drinking to lessen the sweetness Some pluses that haven't changed: -Frequent stamp card! -Aloe jelly -Friendly service CONVENIENCE: *** [Located in the heart of DT Berkeley, parking meters only, closes early 8pm at the latest, but hours can change depending on business.] AMBIANCE: **** [Clean, brightly furnished, resembles SF location, shares space with Top Dog.] SERVICE: **** [Friendly service, shorter wait times, order by drink number.] PRICE: $ [$3.09+ tax, $0.50 per topping] OVERALL: **** [4-stars... cuz altho wait times are shorter, getting to DT Berkeley ain't easy and parking is kinda a B.] Still a fan.
