Karlo’s 5-star review:
When it comes to Mexican restaurants and Hawaii, I tend to be disappointed most of the time. I always believed one place would have great proteins, but the tortilla they offered was only flour, or they would offer great tortillas both flour and corn, but their protein selection would be small and scared of seasoning. They could never put the two together. Then there's also the question of how fresh something is and whether it's possibly just microwaved, canned, or powdered. I've been so disappointed I started making corn tortillas in my backyard from scratch!
When this Yelp event showed up to try them out in Waimalu Shopping Center, I was already thinking that I hope this isn't another disappointment. I've had great Mexican food in my time living in San Diego several years ago. I just recently came off a two week vacation in Mexico in December, so my bar was very high. Everything in Mexico was so good, I hadn't had the heart to eat Mexican with the exception of me making it from scratch at home so as not to ruin the memory of the flavors I had.
The restaurant order window was outside to the left of Vons Chicken and built into the Palama Market. There was seating in the middle of the market itself, though somewhat limited.
The verdict is an astounding pass! They have saved the name of all Hawaii based mexican restaurants, but they also brought me back to Mexico in my first bite! We had the pineapple tamale, birria taco, chicken mole taco, machaca torta, and the horchata. The first win was the price. Other restaurants, we'd be walking away near the $100 mark based on what we ordered. This was nowhere even close to that!
In the first bite of the pineapple tamale, I already knew that this thing was fresh. It's something you wanted your second and third bite and just had to find the will to stop eating it to taste the other food I ordered. The birria and chicken mole street tacos were just the right size for street tacos and had a lot of flavor in them. The machaca torta was bigger than expected and deserved a picture by itself.
The horchata I kept studying. Marhen was speaking to us, who I assume is the owner, and I asked if it was powdered horchata because I was 50/50. The white is more murky of traditional horchata. When it's powdered, it tends to look like what she gave us. It looked powdered but tasted home made, so I was 50/50. She fixed me and said that it was made this morning using several different milks! Points won for not using powder or making a traditional horchata! I get finding the right balance. My bbq marinades have between 10 to 15 sauces and seasonings!
I was the right kind of full after eating. I greeted the restaurant before leaving and told them my friends who are Mexican are coming by later today to give their Mexican stamp of approval! As for me, I'll definitely be back again as they are now on my radar for great food on Oahu!
