I needed this brunch! Ended up in New Haven with canceled plans on a Sunday and wanted to try a new spot and what a great Yelp find. Honestly, this place reminded me of Sylvia's in Harlem before the switch up. Back when cooking had a lil love in it!
We walked in and the dining area was mostly empty so we were seated immediately. The table was wobbly but the owner came over and fixed it herself. There was a DJ playing some Black classics so the vibes were really chill.
I got the chicken and waffles dinner and yum!! The dinner does not include eggs and home fries. The chicken was crispy and flavorful and the waffle paired so well. To drink, I got the s*x in the driveway and oooo be prepared to call an Uber after two of these! This drink is so sweet and I loved it.
All in all, I already made plans for dinner at Ma's this weekend with my momma so that's a testament to my love for this soul food spot.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 12, 2024
I stopped here for sides to go. I got them home and was not very happy.
The greens had too much vinegar and no flavor. The mac and cheese was just a glob of cheese with noodles no flavor. The yams were soupy/watery and very sweet with not even a hint of cinnamon/nutmeg.
The staff was very nice that took my order and the inside is a cute place to sit and socialize.
This was my third attempt to eat at this place. The last two times I arrived and they were not open for their regular hours at 12:00 noon opening.
Clearly, not the place for my liking of soul food sides.
But you go try it and see what you think.
Don't let me judge for you. Enjoy!!Helpful 3Thanks 2Love this 0Oh no 1 - 3352931668Jan 20, 2024
Super cute place in New Haven CT. Feels like home. With home cooking.
Owen and I ordered pulled pork platter, We both got the sweet potato casserole. I personally got the collard greens and he got the mashed potatoes.
No complaints from either of us
Dash got the chicken and waffles . They looked so amazing they also had fresh strawberries
Again no complaints
If I ever get back down to New Haven I would definitely from the ground revisit here.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 2, 2023
Dining at Ma's House truly feels like getting yourself a Sunday dinner plate at your Southern grandmas house. The menu is creative and the food here is delicious! I meant to stop by on Juneteenth but didn't make it out until weeks later. I'm so grateful my friends and I decided to give Ma's House a try for brunch.
One of my favorite things about the restaurant is how welcoming and authentic it feels. As soon as you walk in you're greeted by friendly staff and the careful curated decor truly feels like you're at someone's grandmas home! There are family photos on the wall and a cute replica of Ma's living room, complete with a TV and chairs.
The food here is tasty and flavorful. I tried the fried fish, corn bread, Mac and cheeze, and collard greens. The greens had tender pieces of Turkey in it and the fish was perfectly seasoned and fried to crispy perfection! I absolutely loved the corn bread and ordered a second piece in the middle of my meal. I personally wasn't in love with the mac and cheese but my friends really enjoyed it.
My friends also tried the candied yams, bbq pork, and the signature "ma's plate". Everything was to their liking and we are already planning our next trip to this restaurant!
Lastly, while I don't drink, my friends were impressed with the creative drink menu here. The drinks were strong and packed with love. The names are also hilarious. This is the perfect brunch spot to get lit, and enjoy some good food. The vibes are also fantastic and the music was giving nostalgic Black cookout vibes. Definitely check this place out!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kellz 1.Norwalk, CT0181Jul 2, 2024

My friend and I were on the search for a soulful meal. Glad we ended up at Ma's! The restaurant is very large and the staff was very kind. I got the shrimp and grits minus the bacon and sausage. The grits were cheesy and the shrimp was very flavorful. My friend got the fish and grits. The whiting had great batter and was cooked perfectly. We will definitely be back!

Let me
First say that thank you Yelp. I was searching the area for a breakfast spot but didn't want the traditional bacon and eggs. I came across this spot took a peak at the menu and reviews and let me say it's worth it. The service was excellent. They were very attentive and even answered any questions I may had. The portion size is definitely more than enough for one and pleasing for two. I wanted to try the Fried Fish & Grits and the taste and quality of food was amazing. You can tell that the food was cooked and prepared properly, the utensils were clean and the orange was not boxed style at all. You can taste how fresh it was. There was soulful music playing as I enjoyed my meal. The price is very affordable and I highly recommend if you're in the area or if you're in the mood to try something fantastic to stop by and check it out.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 9, 2023
I loved Lena's, but Ma's fills that brunch void for you and then some! I was here with a few friends, who originally wanted to try Bella's Cafe. An hour wait for a table with a baby was not going to happen though, so we walked up the street to Ma's House. Plenty of tables available and all the right items on the menu for brunch. They had chicken and waffles, hash and eggs, and shrimp and grits, which is what I went with. We all had more than we could eat in one sitting and the food was just fantastic. Everyone was very kind to top it all off. We will definitely be back!

The name Ma's House is perfect as there's warm family feeling when visiting.
The fried chicken has a nice crisp to it and isn't dry at all! It was seasoned to perfection, and after you take the first bite, you're for sure to want more!
The fried fish was also crispy and seasoned well. It wasn't dry nor did it taste fishy at all! The tartar sauce went very well with it and if anything, added MORE to the bite of crispyness!
The Mac n cheese was nice and creamy as well as being flavored to perfection.
The service was great! Our waiter was very attentive!
Just to sum it up, the food was SCRUM-DIDDLY-UMPTIOUS , and the service was IMPECCABLE!
100% would reccomend going to, especially if you want some high quality food with an at home family feel.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
