Yelp’s Top 100 US Restaurants 2023

Your guide to the best places to eat in America this year

Yelpers are always looking for their next great meal. Will it be juicy birria at a local taqueria, 10-alarm hot chicken at a BBQ joint, or a hard-to-snag omakase reservation at a tiny sushi bar? Whatever the latest cravings, you can bet our hungry community has discovered the best places to eat them—then reviewed their experiences for the rest of us.

So, on this 10th anniversary of Yelp’s Top 100 US Restaurants list, we’re excited to reveal this year’s most popular and highly rated restaurants, according to our users.

In the #1 slot is Los Angeles favorite Broken Mouth, a Hawaiian-Korean cafe from chef-owner Tim Lee that has earned 5 stars across more than 1,000 reviews for specialties such as Spam Musubi (“sushi” with canned meat and purple rice) and Meat Jun, a traditional fried beef dish that Yelpers say reminds them of home.

For the first time, island cuisine dominated the top 5 this year. High-rankers include Kaaloa’s Super Js Authentic Hawaiian Food (#2)—a “favorite spot” on the Big Island for its juicy laulau (pork wrapped in taro leaf)—and Adela’s Country Eatery (#5), whose colorful “10-star” noodles made with local ingredients put the popular takeout stand on Oahu’s dining map.

Yelpers also rewarded imaginative cuisine, giving glowing reviews to Ekiben (#17), a “must-go” in Baltimore for its creative bao buns (stuffed with deep-fried chicken), which have been reinvented for a new generation of tastes. Outrageous foods fared well, too, earning Gigi’s Cafe (#14) in Burlingame, California, a coveted spot for “humongous” sandwiches, like the pastrami on toasted Dutch crunch roll.

Other restaurants on this year’s list reflect the growth of inventive plant-based cooking using sustainable products and locally sourced ingredients. Standouts include Tucson’s vegan/vegetarian stunner Tumerico (#8) with its healthy adaptations of Mexican and Cuban classics that taste like the real thing; Hungry Pants (#42), a plant-based eatery in Orlando, where Yelpers gobble up MDPs (Most Delicious Potatoes); and Root (#59), Newport, Rhode Island’s first fully vegan restaurant.

You’ll also find family-owned and -run restaurants serving up authentic cuisines from around the world, breweries that dish out great food with their suds, plus breezy beachfront patios and jazzy urban dining rooms for sun, surf, and special occasions. There’s even a 5-star lunch hotspot hidden away in a former hospital storage room.

Another bit of good news? A lot of great restaurants have reopened for indoor dining this year, while still maintaining takeout and delivery options…so you can choose whether to enjoy a night out or sample the country’s finest cuisines from the comfort of your own home (or Airbnb).

1. Broken Mouth | Lee’s Homestyle, Los Angeles, California

Chef-owner Tim Lee / Spam Musubi

In Hawaii, “broke da mouth” describes food so good, you barely take time to chew it. And Los Angeles restaurant Broken Mouth, Yelp’s top pick for 2023, is that good—but you’ll want to slow down to savor the homestyle comfort foods inspired by chef-owner Tim Lee’s childhood in Oahu. “I wanted to create a unique experience that blends my family history, my roots in Hawaii, and evolving as a chef,” says Tim, who says he’s “Korean by blood, Hawaiian at heart.”

There’s a good reason why Yelpers have awarded the Hawaiian-Korean eatery 5 stars across more than 1,000 reviews. Its compact menu packs a punch, featuring flavors from Tim’s family dinners and his uncle’s Korean restaurant in Honolulu, where he worked early on. For a Korean twist on the traditional Hawaiian plate lunch, Tim swaps white rice and macaroni salad for Korean greens and japgokbap, his mother’s recipe for purple multigrain rice. The entrees are Hawaiian specialties Tim longed for after moving to LA to pursue a restaurant career. Unable to find Meat Jun on the mainland, he re-created the sweet-and-savory fried beef dish with thinly sliced, egg-battered ribeye, which Hawaiian transplants say “tastes like home.” But the star of the show, according to Yelpers, “is the garlic shrimp that’s salty, crunchy, buttery,” eaten with the shell on for a “flavor bomb explosion in your mouth.”

Tim’s small but mighty operation is currently located in a downtown Los Angeles food court. Yelpers love that you can find “something like your grandma would’ve cooked for you back in the day,” but with “a new flair.” The Hawaiian flag and a bookshelf shrine to Spam (a popular Hawaiian ingredient since World War II) evoke a sense of home—as does Tim’s warm brand of customer service.

“At the end of the day, I pursue what I love to do, and I love talking to people and sharing my food and family,” he says. While most of Tim’s relatives are still in Oahu, the Broken Mouth | Lee’s Homestyle family extends far and wide—even to customers like Edlyn W., who says, “[Tim] Lee is one of the kindest humans you’ll ever meet! He serves his food with love and aloha spirit.”

Popular dishes: Local Plate (breakfast of grilled Portuguese sausage, two sunny-side-up eggs, and purple rice); Spam Musubi (with purple rice wrapped sushi-style in seaweed); or Plate Lunch with Garlic Shrimp or Teri Chicken. For vegetarians, there’s “perfectly crispy” tofu with house-made hot sauce. You can even order Hawaii’s Aloha Maid juice drinks to go with your meal. (There’s plenty of seating, but be prepared to wait as this small team cooks your food to order.)

Yelpers say: “Aloha is alive and well at Broken Mouth! Meat Jun (5/5): flavorful, tender, sliced beef, battered and deep fried. The purple rice is chewy, nutty, and a nice change from white or brown rice. Teri Chicken (5/5): As my co-worker put it, the chicken was cooked to perfection! The flavors were on point and reminded me of the plate lunches I grew up eating. The owner Timothy Lee is what truly makes Broken Mouth special. [He] works very hard to serve a delicious plate of food.” —Yelp Elite Kelly K.

Pork Laulau Platter

Considered one of the Big Island’s top lunch spots, Kaaloa’s specializes in laulau, a popular Hawaiian dish made from fatty pork wrapped in green taro leaf and steamed until “rich, meaty, and tender.” Preparing this delicacy takes more than 12 hours, according to Jaye Kaaloa Kunz, who runs the restaurant with her parents. Each laulau order comes with an array of “ono grindz” (slang for “delicious food”), such as fresh lomilomi salmon (a tangy, salsa-like concoction of diced tomatoes, onions, and salted salmon); rich, creamy potato-macaroni salad; and a mound of white rice.

A slice of Sweet Potato Haupia Pie—a rich mixture of ube (purple yam), condensed milk, and butter topped with Hawaiian coconut pudding—hits the spot for dessert. You won’t wait more than a minute or two for food, say owners Janice and John Kaaloa, who cater to busy vacationers.

Popular dishes: Lunch plates of tender and moist Pork Laulau or Chicken Laulau are Yelper favorites. The “nice and smoky” Kalua Pork with Cabbage also gets rave reviews, with a pork-to-cabbage ratio that leans heavily toward meat.

Yelpers say: “One of my favorite spots to eat on the Big Island! Such a sweet family-owned spot that you don’t want to miss, especially if you are driving through or in the area. I always love getting a plate—the Pork Laulau is the best I’ve ever had. They are always so friendly and it always feels like home when eating there.” —Yelp Elite Anna B.

3. Archibalds Village Bakery, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Absolutely delicious pastries” have Yelpers giddy about this bakery just steps from Fort Lauderdale Beach. Locals and tourists come for the #1-selling cinnamon roll (huge, iced, and weekends only) and nutty-sweet Morning Glory Loaf—which, according to chef-owner Justin Mathys-Archibald, has “a little bit of everything” (including carrots, pineapple, shredded apple, raisins, walnut, and coconut). Chef Justin and husband Christopher provide “carb-tainment” at this chill cafe from 7 am–3 pm most days. After your first visit, you’ll feel like pals with the welcoming pair, who “know all their regulars by name.”

The couple opened Archibalds after exploring similar concepts in Florida, Seattle, and Europe. In addition to pastries inspired by both sides of the pond, you can also munch on quiches, breakfast wraps (try the one with egg, bacon, tomato, avocado, and cheese, plus a dash of hot sauce), hearty lunch items, and a full coffee menu featuring locally roasted Blooming Bean java. A grab-and-go section also stocks sandwiches, wraps, and yogurt parfaits. “This place is always busy because everyone knows it’s the best,” so get there early before they sell out.

Popular dishes: Yelpers rave about the blueberry scones with lemon glaze (which Chef Justin developed in homage to blueberry Pop-Tarts), a moist lemon poppy-seed loaf, and the “best chocolate chip cookie in all of Broward County.”

Yelpers say: “Wonderful cute little English bakery with a lot of charm!! Delicious baked goods right off the beaten path of the beautiful beach at Las Olas Boulevard. This place is a hidden gem.” — Yelp Elite Aaron C.

4. Beyer Deli, San Diego, California

New Yorker Sandwich

Top-quality, fresh-cut meats landed Beyer Deli on Yelp’s Top Places to Eat in San Diego last year. Yelpers regularly make the trek to this local favorite, located less than 4 miles from the Mexico border, for deli classics like the Reuben, Italian Submarine, and Triple-Decker Clubs. But fans also rave about specialty sandwiches served on tortas (Mexican-style buns)—such as the “enormous” Tuna Melt or the New Yorker, loaded with grilled pastrami and corned beef—which Arti B. calls “hands down [the] best sandwich in town.”

The family-owned deli is known for generous portions at reasonable prices: Most sandwiches cost less than $11, and the big helpings are “too good to share.” Yelpers swear by the Man Handler, with pastrami, bacon, cole slaw, and Thousand Island dressing—“a sweet and delicious combination with melted provolone cheese that pulls it all together.” The small, family-run shop is equally beloved for its customer service, greeting guests by name and with a warm welcome. Just make sure you stop by an ATM first, since Beyer Deli is cash-only.

Popular dishes: Other fave sandwiches include the spicy Raging Bull (roast beef with chiles and provolone), BP Special (roast beef, turkey, and bacon), and Hot and Delicious (turkey and avocado). If you still have room, Yelpers also recommend the “fantastic” soups and chili.

Yelpers say: “I’m not sure you can miss with anything you order. I had a variety of their sandwiches and all were excellent. The Reuben, however, [was] easily one of my all-time favorites…the rye bread alone almost brought a tear to my eye. Overall impression: Customer service was outstanding, food was an awesome treat, and the price was pretty unbeatable.” —Yelp Elite Geoff L.

5. Adela’s Country Eatery, Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii

Ube Cheesecake

Oahu’s natural bounty is on display at this small takeout spot, which was founded on a mission of sustainability. After learning the art of noodle-making in Japan, owners Adela Visitacion and Millie Chan perfected their recipe using locally grown Hawaiian produce that would otherwise be thrown away: purple-hued Okinawan sweet potatoes from nearby farms, ’ulu (or breadfruit, which grows on trees in many locals’ backyards), and malunggay (or moringa, a nutrient-dense green leaf). Even before it landed on Yelp’s Top Places to Eat in Oahu last year, in-the-know locals and tourists were lining up for heaping to-go portions of Adela’s famous fresh noodles with delicious homemade sauces. Pair any pasta type with Adela’s equally flavorful toppings, such as Lechon (“crispy, juicy, and flavorful” pork belly), Shrimp Scampi with Garlic Butter, and Braised Short Rib. Six kinds of dried noodles are also available to cook at home, in case you “often dream of” them like Yelper Lucy Y.

Even without dine-in service, the owners’ “aloha spirit” makes for a memorable experience. “We always try to show people the best of Hawaii,” says Richard Chan, who sources noodle ingredients from local farmers. As for seating, he recommends driving to nearby Heʻeia State Park, where you can slurp your noodles with an ocean view. After all, he says, “Who wants to sit inside in Hawaii?”

Popular dishes: Top sellers include Lechon (pork belly) Malunggay Pasta; Taro Pasta (with shrimp, luau leaves, mushrooms, and coconut cream sauce); and a Braised Short Ribs plate lunch with Garlic Green Beans. Or sample a little of everything by making your own noodle plate; choose from 6 pastas, 10 sauces, and 9 toppings. For dessert, there’s Ube Cheesecake made with the sweet purple yam; it’s “the perfect balance of ube and New York cheesecake flavors and richness,” according to Yelper Jason R.

Yelpers say: “If I could give Adela’s a 10-star review, I would! This is gourmet-quality food. The Macadamia-Encrusted Mahi Mahi was exquisite. We tried 3 types of noodles, each being more delicious. Our best meal on this island in 2 years—and the fact that the owners were so kind and helpful was the cherry on top. Our new favorite restaurant.” —Sonia C.

6. Sunbliss Cafe, Anaheim, California

Black Lava Mocha (left) / Strawberry Matcha (right), and Beignets

Just 15 miles from Disneyland, Sunbliss Cafe might be the second-happiest place on Earth. Fresh smoothie bowls, colorful lattes with homemade syrups, and walls decked out in air plants and succulents set the stage for this California-cool cafe. Toasts come on pillowy white bread, and the bowls contain healthy goodies—from hand-blended açai berries to “one of the best house-made almond milks I have tasted across California,” writes Yelp Elite Miranda L. The originality is no accident, says owner Tani Ahmed. “Everything I’ve loved in my childhood, my favorite travel experiences, and things that I’ve never been able to find in other places I incorporated into Sunbliss,” she notes.

The real gem? Lattes that taste as good as they look. Each drink is a dreamy sunset of pastel layers: mint-green matcha, coconut cream clouds, or vibrant blue foam made from butterfly pea flower—a plant from Thailand that Yelpers say adds a “touch of ingenuity and glam.” Standouts include the Kepania (a Spanish latte with house-made vanilla syrup, condensed milk, and cinnamon), Cloudy Coconut Cold Brew (from organic Hawaiian beans), and house-made chai, which Tani says holds a special place in her heart: “I’m Indian and Bangladeshi—chai is a very romantic language for us.”

Popular dishes: Milky drinks may be the headliners, but visitors and locals also crave the food—popular Sunbliss Açai Bowl, Ocean (smoothie) Bowl, and Classic Avocado Toast. In true SoCal fashion, the cafe accommodates special diets, so look for gluten-free, keto-friendly, and vegan menus, all prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Some best-selling drinks, like a Banana Bread Latte, are available seasonally—so watch for the Valentine’s Day menu.

Yelpers say: “Wow! I got the almond honey latte and my hubby got the Kepania (Spanish latte); both were fantastic! As a barista myself, I love to try out fun local spots. 8. Tumerico, Tucson, Arizona

Huevos Rancheros

Tumerico is Chef Wendy Garcia’s love letter to vegan and vegetarian Mexican cuisine. A native of Mexico, she honed her craft at Tucson fine-dining spots Primo and Feast before opening this Sam Hughes-area location in 2014. A daily-changing chalkboard menu features fresh, healthy antojitos (“Mexican appetizers”) and tacos that “steal the show.”

Yelpers love the 2-to-a-plate Cuban Tacos—shredded jackfruit with a texture “just like meat” on tortillas that are “fresh and soft.” Crispy potato tacos, also a popular dish, are filled with creamy mashed spuds, cashew crema, and rich guacamole. The secret to Wendy’s cooking? “We use lots of local ingredients, like mesquite flour for a smooth and sweet flavor, cholla buds [from the cholla cactus], and tepary beans,” she says.

Popular dishes: Yelper faves include huevos rancheros with fresh farm eggs smothered in a savory red sauce, and al pastor tacos with jackfruit marinated in a rich, red adobo sauce. Vegan tamale plates and pozole (vegetable soup with hominy) are also popular. Don’t forget a visit to the salsa bar for tasty homemade sauces.

Falafel Pita

Middle Eastern home cooking is an art form at Sababa, which offers “picture perfect” falafel bowls and sandwiches made the way owners Suzie and Salah Othman grew up eating them in Jerusalem—freshly baked pita pockets stuffed with falafel or halal chicken, plus unlimited toppings (there are nearly 20 to choose from). Whichever style you prefer, Yelpers praise Sababa’s “most authentic falafel”  and “really genuine hummus.” Many items can be made vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, a big draw for Orange County diners.

The aroma [of pastry] is in the air.”

15. Vietwich, Stafford, Texas

Enoki Tofu Sandwich

His dedication to the dish has led to hundreds of 5-star reviews for his casual, counter-order restaurant, along with regular appearances on Yelp’s Top 100 Texas Restaurants list.

Viet’s culinary journey started with a 2009 YouTube show called “Tran Can Cook,” in which he demonstrated Vietnamese recipes he learned from his mother; later, he competed on a TV show called “America’s Next Great Restaurant.” He began Vietwich as a part-time operation in a small gas station with a borrowed kitchen. As word of mouth grew, he was finally able to open a full restaurant in 2019.

Viet works hard to create the perfect balance of ingredients—the proper smear of pate, the perfect tang of pickled carrots, the ideal amount of marinated meat, and even the right distribution of cilantro and jalapeño. “Overall, the combination of these specifically prepared ingredients and flavors make our banh mi stand out,” he says. “That, plus the heart and soul from my mom’s cooking.”

Popular dishes: There are 7 sandwiches on the small menu, and Yelpers say “you can taste the attention to detail and quality.” Choose from 3 classic banh mi varieties (pork, beef, or chicken); pork meatball; The Dac Viet (a cold-cut combo); Enoki Tofu (fried tofu with a veggie-oyster sauce and enoki mushrooms); and The TKO (thit kho) with caramelized pork belly.

Yelpers say: “The fresh ingredients that make up these banh mi is what sets them apart. The softness of the inside of the baguette with the crunchiness of it is a great mix. I got the Vietwich Classic Pork. The lemongrass-grilled pork was not overpowering and had a nice balance of flavor with the rest of the crisp ingredients. We [also] got the Hawaiian sunset with light Boba and the taro coconut drink. Both were refreshing and delicious.” —Yelp Elite Lizeth S.

It also had the right amount of spice so you only got a little kick. Ugh, it was so good I wish I had it in front of me right now! Our waiter was so attentive and kept checking in on us. We were seated, ate, and checked out in less than an hour. 10/10 experience, and plan to make a stop in Costa Mesa just for their curry next time I’m in the SoCal area!” —Yelp Elite Daisy S.

Beef Short Rib with Risotto

Using techniques passed down by her mom and nonna (grandma), Il Paesano co-founder Paola Peixoto makes legendary pasta that “melts in your mouth,” according to Yelper Michael B. Even more noteworthy, pasta-making wasn’t her first career. Paola, a former pharmacist, and her husband Vergilio, an engineer, created this Italian gem in Fort Lauderdale after immigrating to the US from South Africa. With no American work experience, they struggled to find employment—eventually opening a restaurant that honors their European heritages. Dining in the intimate space “brings me back to my travels in Italy,” says Yelp Elite May L

Remarkably, 100% of the ingredients used by Il Paesano are imported from Italy. The Peixotos don’t keep a standing menu, so treat yourself to the day’s special. There are always chicken, fish, and meat entrees as well as handmade pasta dishes. Hint: the bolognese sauce, which cooks for four hours in the morning, is a don’t-miss. Guests craving a glass of vino are ushered to the market’s wine cave, where they can select a bottle at grocery-store prices. No matter what you order, you’ll be served “a slice of Italy,” Yelpers say.

Popular dishes: Truly incredible, fall-off-the-bone” Beef Short Rib with risotto is the most-Yelped-about entree. Don’t sleep on the most popular dessert: “exquisite” tiramisu that Yelpers describe as the “best [they’ve] ever had.”

Yelpers say: “Every time I fly in from D.C. to visit my parents, we come here. Why? The quality of their dishes, the homemade taste, the warmth of the place. You’d be hard pressed to find an Italian place that serves the quality of pasta they do with the grace they do it. I’ve tried their ragú, gnocchi, but my favorite is always the fagottini stuffed with pear in gorgonzola. So good, I dream of it.” —Yelp Elite Malvina G.

My parents have met and helped so many people over the years because of our business—by sending them to schools, recommending the library, or employing them temporarily,” says Aleen Atencio, a Pitaland manager and daughter of founders Joe and Jocelyne Chahine. The Chahines began the business after immigrating to the US from Lebanon and have managed to keep the operation a true family business in its 5-plus decades.

Yelpers say: “I’ve heard from a Lebanese colleague for ages that I have to try Pitaland. I got a sample platter with baba ghanoush, hummus, and tabouli. The servings were extremely generous, and we had enough to last for another week at home with more pita! I also got the gyro which was juicy and packed full of meat. Highly recommend trying this place and taking a bag or three of the fresh pita home with you!” —Yelp Elite Tracy C.

I then asked the chef, as he walked by, what he would recommend, and to surprise me, he made the most delicious Mofongo Caribbean dish. I was blown away with its unique flavors and textures. You are missing out if you do not go here!” —Jennifer R.

Pappardelle with Short Rib

99. Kiin Di, Austin, Texas

Killer Noodles

This all-female, Asian-owned hotspot makes good on its name (Kiin Di translates to “eating good”) with its concise menu of Thai favorites backed by “original cooking techniques from Thailand,” according to the food truck’s website. The ladies know best—3 out of 4 owners are from Thailand with restaurant veterans among them.

“The flavor of our food will be the same as in Thailand, but presented in different, fun ways,” says co-owner Panyada Chaikantha, who immigrated to the US to attend college. That includes the Thai Me Down, a taco-like concoction that wraps Thai-style fried chicken, spring mix, jalapeño peppers, and homemade spicy aioli in roti bread (traditionally found in Southern Thailand). “It’s fitting because we live in Austin, and everybody here loves tacos,” says co-owner Lori He.

Along with other owners Bee TP and Chris Matthana, the quad keeps the menu intentionally small (around 10 entrees). They rotate in soups when it’s cold outside, mango sticky rice ice cream when it’s hot, as well as a range of monthly specials. “We’re different than other food trucks.
