Yelp’s 2023 Home Design Trends with TV Personality JoJo Fletcher

Predicting the hottest home trends of 2023

In 2022, many of us were upgrading our backyards for year-round use, building dedicated home offices for distraction-free work, and repainting kitchen cabinets for affordable kitchen remodels. In the new year, we expect a shift to cozy indoor design and decor. Are you ready for a new project? Today, we reveal home improvement and design trends that are expected to be big in 2023.

To help you navigate next year’s hottest home trends, Yelp tapped its team of Data Scientists, Community Managers, Trend Expert Tara Lewis, and reality-TV personality and real estate developer JoJo Fletcher (pictured above), to see which design trends will fill everyone’s social media news feeds. We looked at millions of Yelp reviews for words, phrases, and businesses across home improvement categories that saw significant interest between 2021 and 2022, in order to zero in on what to watch for next year.

Our predictions? Vintage pieces, custom-framed art, and textured, limewashed walls will lead next year’s trend toward more comfy, lived-in spaces. Whether you’re looking to warm up your home’s color palette or you’re eyeing a more family-friendly kitchen design, keep scrolling to discover our forecast for the coming year. And see all the 2023 home, food, and beauty trends here.

Walls: Design a gallery of memories

Whether you choose fine art or family photos, gallery walls are a growing trend in home decor.

Gallery walls—decorated with framed photographs, paintings, or art prints—are a great way to transform a living space, add character, showcase fond memories, and express personal style. Thoughtful arrangements in a living room, hallway, or bedroom can create a visually interesting statement wall that’s as minimalist or trendy as you’d like. Searches for custom framing have increased 17% on Yelp, as homeowners and renters turn to local framing professionals to showcase their art and photos in fun, museum-worthy displays.

Kitchen & bath: Go natural with earth-toned wall tile

Simple tile styles, natural materials, and earth tones are showing up in more kitchens and bathrooms.

While simple white subway tiles are always a classic style, once-trendy designs and shapes are giving way to simple patterns paired with unique materials, finishes, and color schemes. The result: a beautiful, timeless statement. Think Hilary Duff’s glossy green kitchen and backsplash made with jewel-toned glazed tiles, or Emma Chamberlain’s chic cork tile bathroom crafted from natural materials. Searches for wall tile have increased 12%, as homeowners turn to trusted pros for new, on-trend looks. Highly rated home remodeling professionals in your area can help design, source, and install kitchen and bathroom wall tile to suit your style.

Pro tip: Jojo’s Take | One with nature
“Recently, I’ve been finding myself reaching for nature-inspired materials more often than not. When thinking about easy updates to the home, wall tiles have always been a favorite hack of mine for making a statement on a budget. For 2023, I’m excited to incorporate earth tones into this classic trend and beyond, using warm colors and textures in rusts, sage greens, and browns. Earth tones are definitely here to stay.”

Paint: Create a lived-in look with limewashing

Limewash paint, made with natural crushed limestone, can add rich texture and dimension to walls inside or outside your home. Compatible with the trend toward cozier, more lived-in spaces, limewash is on the rise, with searches up 79% in the past year, according to Yelp data. In addition to being nontoxic and eco-friendly, limewash has natural pigments that offer a distinct aesthetic quality not found in regular paint. Although neutral shades are most common, the trend is to tint with more colorful hues that can create the ambiance you desire. The finished look, including the level of texture and depth of color, depends on the technique used during application. With Yelp’s Request a Quote feature, you can easily find professional painters in your area to help with design, sourcing, and applying limewash paint on your timeline and budget.

Pro tip: Jojo’s Take | Layered and cozy textures
“Texture has always been one of my favorite design elements to create a layered and cozy look in my own home, and these days, it can be showcased in so many ways beyond textiles. From leathered countertops and pleated lighting to plastered and limewashed walls, creating movement with texture is a sure way to add interest to any area. One of my favorite painting techniques to create a more “lived-in” space is limewashing. These simple painting and texture techniques add a wonderful ambiance to a room, transforming it into the most inviting space.”

Vintage: Out with the new, in with the old

Reusing and “upcycling” vintage materials is an increasingly popular (and sustainable) way to decorate your home while achieving a unique look.

Searches for upcycling and recycling are up 50% on Yelp. We expect the trend to continue as more people seek unique furniture, home decor, and building materials for their homes while aiming to shop “small” and sustainably. Local businesses like It’s Not Trash in Los Angeles, specialize in furniture made from beautifully repurposed materials—from reclaimed wood bed frames to mid century-modern entertainment centers. Discovering the best nearby antique and thrift stores is also key to finding pre-loved, long-lasting treasures you won’t see in every home.

Pro tip: Jojo’s Take | Vintage-inspired accents
“There’s nothing I love more than creating a space that feels fresh yet timeless, by incorporating one-of-a-kind vintage pieces that I’ve scouted from local antique or thrift stores. One of my best-kept secrets is finding top-rated small businesses on Yelp to discover local hidden gems. Vintage-inspired decor is the perfect way to bring life to any space, instantly making it feel warm and welcoming. Personally, I find myself saving up for that one ‘splurge’ piece (rug, table, etc.) that I know will be well worth it in my overall design.”

Lighting: Illuminate your mood

Mood lighting affects the look and feel of a room, just as much as furniture and decor.

Lighting can be more than a functional fixture. Mood lighting, for example, can make a space feel more inviting. With adjustable settings in ambient hues, mood lighting uplifts any room—especially those lacking natural light, such as converted garages and mudrooms. Searches for lighting on Yelp are up 32% over the last year, and we expect this trend to continue as people transform homes into their own personal oases.

Pro tip: Jojo’s Take | Leading with Lighting
“Looking ahead, I’m seeing more design discussions start with lighting, rather than finish with it. Lighting is an integral primary step in the architectural phase to create a home that feels inviting. No longer an afterthought, lighting should be seen as more than just functional—something that truly transforms the overall feel of a space. I recently hired a great local pro through Yelp to install new fixtures throughout one of my renovation projects, and instantly the space felt more relaxed and intimate.”

Celebrate: Decorate for the seasons

A return to seasonal entertaining means more homeowners are getting professional help to raise their holiday-decorating game.

Searches on Yelp for holiday decorating services were up 21% in the past 12 months. People are eager to make up for missed gatherings over the past few years, so they’re seeking help from pros to take holiday decorations to the next level. We expect to see more homeowners hire local businesses to create flawless, festive settings for upcoming celebrations.
