Judge Aileen Cannon on Monday dismissed the classified documents case against Donald Trump, ruling that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith was unlawful. Smith will appeal the decision, a spokesman said.
The decision by Cannon, who was nominated by Trump, comes just days after an assassination attempt against the former president and on the same day the Republican National Convention begins in Milwaukee.
Trump, meanwhile, is facing three other criminal cases. He is the first former American president to be convicted of a crime.
