Seeing your student begin or continue their college journey can be an experience filled with questions for parents and other supporters. To help, UMass Boston offers an orientation program designed just for parents, families, and supporters. Known as Family Orientation, this program focuses on ways to support students during their time at UMass Boston and help them succeed on their path to graduation.
Family Orientation Learning Outcomes
As a result of attending family orientation, participants will…
- be confident in sharing with their students the resources available to promote student success
- understand the various policies and important deadlines required for students
- realize the role they play in their student’s transition to UMass Boston
- demonstrate how to effectively communicate with their students throughout their transition
- begin to establish community connections with other family members or supporters
- learn how to stay connected and engaged through the Beacon Family Hub
Steps to Register for Orientation
Follow the steps below to select your orientation date:
1. Go to the Beacon Family Hub
- Create a profile on the Beacon Family Hub.
- Check with your student to confirm which orientation date they selected so you could attend Family Orientation on the same day.
- You may attend Family Orientation on a different day if it is better for your schedule.
2. Register for a Session
- On the Beacon Family Hub, click the Family Orientation banner at the top of the page.
- Fill out the registration form and select the orientation date that is right for you.
- After completing the questionnaire and be sure to click SUBMIT to confirm your registration.
3. Pay the Fee
- Once you register, a confirmation email will be sent to your email with a link to pay the $25.00 registration fee.
- If you have any issues paying the orientation fee, please email family@umb.edu
- Additional reminder emails with more details will be sent prior to your family orientation session.
4. Review the Check-List
- Prior to your student's orientation, review the Pre-Orientation Checklist to make sure your student is prepped for their session.
- If they have any questions, encourage them to contact the orientation team at orientation@umb.edu.
