Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been together for more than three decades, with the two actors having celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary just a few months ago. The couple, both 66, first met on the set of sitcom Bosom Buddies in 1981 and reunited on the film Volunteers (1985). The pair went public with their romance in around 1986.

They have two children together, with them parents to Chet Hanks, 32, and Truman Hanks, 27. Tom is also father to Colin Hanks, 45, and Elizabeth Hanks, 41, from his first marriage. Tom has suggested that there is no secret to his decades-long marriage to wife Rita, though the couple have both given insights into their romance and advice over the years.

'Don't be stupid'

Tom - who has worked with his wife on various projects over the years, including on the film Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - has spoken about their romance in interviews previously. This included him being asked about the secret to their marriage during an interview that he did with Extra back in 2015, whilst he was promoting his film Bridges of Spies.

Discussing their relationship, he told the outlet at the time: "Don't be stupid. I think that anybody that gets married is partaking in an act of bravery." He added: "I'm a lucky man."

'Always tell the truth'

He once more shared romantic advice when he appeared on the Sooo Many White Guys podcast in 2017 when he was asked about his decades-long marriage to Rita.

"We didn't get married on the fly [or] in a fever. We weren't like so enamoured with each other that we had some goofy version of what love or togetherness is," he said.

Sharing something that he's discovered in the relationship, he commented: "We learned the secret of happiness with each other a long time ago and that's always telling the truth."

He added: "She makes me laugh harder now than she did in 1986 so there's no secret. You just gotta meet the right person and when the time comes, when you go all in, you go in all."

'Tend to the fire'

Rita has spoken about their marriage over the years too, including in a post that she shared on social media in 2019, which celebrated the couple's 31st wedding anniversary.

She wrote alongside a photo of her and Tom: "People often ask what is our secret to a long marriage. Well, I co-wrote a song about this on my new album Halfway to Home. [The song is] called The Spark. In any longer-term relationship, if you're lucky, you started with a spark, that beautiful glimmer that ignites into a lasting love.

"Fires need to be tended to, stoked, added to, watched." She subsequently added: "As long as there is a spark you'll always have a fire".
