Rihanna gets in bed with Kimmel and Helen Mirren 'sucks in' helium

This article is more than 9 years old

Blame April Fools’ Day, but talkshows this week were full of stunts, from Jimmy Kimmel’s rude awakening to James Corden broadcasting from a stranger’s house

Helen Mirren inhales helium

On a promotional visit for her new play The Audience, Dame Helen stopped by Fallon’s desk to talk about acting, awards season, and that picture of her next to a manspreader on the F train. Oh, she also sucked back helium and did half the interview in a chipmunk voice. As Fallon puts it, she’s a classy, elegant lady with a beautiful accent ... how might that sound on helium? It’s classic Tonight Show juvenile behavior: Mirren makes “sucking it in” jokes, the two play with their balloons, Mirren accepts a panda award, and neither can stop giggling over their new voices. The Dame’s done it again.

David Duchovny has an album out?

David Duchovny, best known for the X-Files and for ageing like a fine wine, sat down with David Letterman this week to talk about Mulder and Scully’s triumphant return. While he’s a bit surprised people still want to see the gang back together, he’s grateful for the opportunity and says he’s excited about the new season. He and Dave chatted fatherhood, showbiz and, in a surprise twist ... his album? Duchovny has a song out on iTunes right now, with an album coming out in May. He taught himself to play, buying a fancy guitar and practicing in front of his kids: “I’m half-Jewish and half-Scottish, so I knew if I bought a very expensive guitar ... I would play it.” The tunes are out there!

Puppies predict the Final Four

Jimmy Fallon has consulted the wisdom of adorable puppies before. This week the Puppy Predictors trotted down a ramp towards four bowls to predict the winners of NCAA basketball. While all the puppies avoided the Duke bowl and Michigan State was crowned the winner, I think it’s pretty clear that the real winner here was puppies.

Rihanna pranks Kimmel

April Fools’ Day came for us all this week, and Jimmy Kimmel was no exception. In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, while Kimmel was peacefully asleep with his mouth guard in, Rihanna and a camera crew invaded his house, making it rain on the sleeping Kimmel and providing an impromptu performance of Rihanna’s latest single, Bitch Better Have My Money. Kimmel’s a bit of a notorious prankster, and Badgal RiRi decided she was going to get him back by jumping on his bed with a crew dressed up as some kind of glitter disco monster. “I have to admit, this isn’t usually how you come to me in my dreams,” Kimmel said. Shhh, Jimmy. Put your mouthguard back in and don’t worry about it.

The Late Late Show broadcasts from Tommy’s House

James Corden has dived right in to the Late Late Show, with exciting results. During their second week, Corden and crew headed out into the streets of LA, knocking on doors to find somewhere new to host the show. After a few crushing rejections, they finally land on the calm but confused (“Are you really going to do this?”), backwards-baseball-hat-wearing Tommy. The bit is slow off the top, but the ramshackle nature of a late-night show from a regular living room is charming and fun, with Tommy’s household forming the audience, some of the crew, and celebrity guests.
