Hyde Park is the latest community in Utah to agree to deployment of a Google Fiber network, according to the company.
The Herald Journal reported that the Hyde Park City Council approved the agreement during a meeting on June 26. Google Fiber, which is branded as GFiber, will begin construction this year and connect its first customers next summer. A Google representative confirmed the agreement to Telecompetitor.
Hyde Park, with a population of approximately 5,600, has ample need for fiber internet. The town’s mayor, Bryan Cox, told the Herald Journal that the need for fiber is significant, due to a heavy concentration of online educational activity and home- and web-based businesses.
GFiber is no stranger to Utah. In March 2015, Google Fiber said that it would build a network in Salt Lake City. It joined Atlanta, Nashville and two North Carolina cities — Charlotte and Raleigh — as new Google Fiber cities.
There has also been more recent GFiber activity in the Beehive State. On May 15, 2023, GFiber signed a license agreement with the city of Logan for a fiber broadband network.
Construction in Logan was expected to begin last year. An executive quoted in the story said that GFiber was continuing to build out along the Wasatch Front and that the project would open more northern areas of the state and lead to company projects in Idaho.
In a separate blog post released on the same day, GFiber said that it would look to Salt Lake City to be one of the test sites for its 20 Gbps service.
The company also has an agreement to build a network in North Logan. The project was announced in February, with a start time in spring. It will take several years to complete.
