A San Diego officer fatally shot a man who reportedly approached police with a knife in La Jolla Saturday morning, sheriff’s officials said.

The incident began about 7 a.m. when multiple people reported seeing a man with a knife causing a disturbance on La Jolla Boulevard near Midway Street in the Bird Rock community, sheriff’s Lt. Lon Nguyen said in a release. Many businesses are in the area, including a CVS Pharmacy.

Officers arrived and found a man in his 20s next to a vehicle that was stopped in the road, Nguyen said. As the officers approached, sheriff’s officials said the man walked toward police with a knife.

“The officers drew their service weapons and gave the subject verbal commands to drop the weapon,” Nguyen said in a release. “One officer fired his weapon, striking the man.”

The man was taken to a hospital where he died. No officers were injured.

The officer who fired has been with the Police Department for about three years and is assigned to Northern Division.

The Sheriff’s Department is handling the incident under a countywide protocol that ensures no law enforcement agency investigates its own police shootings.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330 or Crime Stoppers anonymous at (888) 580-8477.
