Introduction
In keeping with tradition, Samsung has released a new version of One UI alongside the latest major Android OS upgrade for mobile devices. Predictably, it's called One UI 5.0 and accompanies Android 13.
Throughout 2022, Samsung updated countless Galaxy phones to One UI 4.1, after which the company debuted One UI 4.1.1 alongside its Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 foldable phones. One UI 5.0 came last near the end of 2022 and was first available as a firmware update for the Galaxy S22 series.
By the end of 2022, several Galaxy phones and tablets received One UI 5.0, and many others joined the list in 2023.
One UI 5.0 design
In terms of surface design, One UI 5.0 isn't all that different from One UI 4.1 and One UI 4.1.1. It follows the same design language as previous One UI updates; however, minor aspects have changed to improve the user experience and ease of access.
The Color Palette feature gained a few more options in One UI 5.0. More importantly, it allows users to choose between color palettes that are based on the wallpaper or a list of basic colors. The caller ID pop-up was also simplified, and even the call background received a new gradient color scheme.
Some UI design changes even extended to Samsung DeX. The desktop environment comes with redesigned Quick Settings and Notifications panels and a new Calendar pop-up.
One UI 5.0 features
One UI 5.0 brings a handful of new features meant to modernize the UI and improve the user experience. Stacked widgets are among them, as you can now create smart widgets using widgets that belong to different apps, as long as they are the same size.
The lock screen customization menu is completely redesigned in One UI 5.0. It streamlines the customization experience and puts more options in the hands of the user, who can now modify various elements of the lock screen from a convenient menu that has a live preview of all the changes being made.
The Recent Apps screen has a new option in One UI 5.0 that allows you to manage background apps with more ease. And for Galaxy tablets, the layout and Recent Apps animations have improved.
One UI 5.0 also adds per-contact call backgrounds, and the Settings app has a new “Connected devices” menu, dedicated to connectivity features including Smart View, SmartThings, Galaxy Wearable, Samsung DeX, Android Auto, and more.
Bixby OCR (optical character recognition) is better integrated with One UI 5.0. This powerful tool can now be summoned directly from the Gallery app, Samsung Internet, and Samsung Notes.
Other One UI 5.0 features include a new watermarking tool inside the Camera app, a powerful Finder embedded in the Samsung DeX taskbar, and Maintenance Mode, the latter of which can come in handy when the user needs to leave their Galaxy phone or tablet at a repair center. It locks everyone else out of personal data stored on the device.
The Multi-Window gestures and taskbar (for tablets and the Galaxy Z Fold series) were previously available only for select devices in One UI 4.1.1. With One UI 5.0, these features were made available across the board. The new multi-window gestures make multitasking a much more enjoyable and practical experience.
One UI 5.0 release
The One UI 5.0 beta program was launched by Samsung in August 2022. After the beta program ended, the Galaxy S22 series was the first to adopt One UI 5.0 publicly. Many other devices are eligible for Android 13 and One UI 5.0, a full list of which can be found here.
Samsung continued updating numerous other Galaxy phones and tablets to Android 13 One UI 5.0 throughout the end of 2022, including the Galaxy S21 and S20 lineups, the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy foldable phones, and even a handful of mid-range Galaxy A devices. Many Samsung Galaxy tablets, both mid-range and high-end, have also received One UI 5.0 in 2022.
Other Samsung devices were scheduled to receive the One UI 5.0 update in 2023.
