Rising from obscurity with the winning entry in the 1922 Chicago Tribune skyscraper competition, Raymond Hood next created this radical black brick tower he said was inspired in part by the Eliel Saarinen design that took second prize. To avoid the monotony of black window holes that he said made buildings look like waffles, Hood camouflaged the voids with a dark facade, then offset the gloom with gold accents.
