Pointillism Project for the Entire Class
This year, I wanted to put a little different spin on Dot Day. I had just completed a new collaboration poster of Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. I realized this would be the perfect (and unique) Dot Day art project. I showed my students an example of Seurats’ iconic artwork and showed how it is completely made up of little dots. As we made our version, each student added colors and dots in their own individual ways.

Drawing with Scissors (and embracing the process!). Normally, when someone says they’re going to be drawing, the expectation is to use a pencil. However, there are no pencils allowed in this “drawing” activity! Instead, these drawings will be created by cutting, arranging, and gluing colored pieces of paper. This lesson takes inspiration from Henri Matisse’s artworks called cut-outs. It’s an excellent way for students to experiment with shapes and see the art tools they usually use in new ways. Pollock Style Pumpkin Decorating Activity
If you want a quick and easy idea for decorating pumpkins, I think you’ll love these Pollock Pumpkins. Kids are always fascinated to learn that someone could be so famous from splattering paint everywhere. This is a great time to talk to kids about why artists become famous and they can start to see that being an artist is about discovering and experimenting with ideas – much like a scientist. This is a great activity for young children and great for their gross motor skills.
The inspiration for this project is from an artist named Henri Matisse, who was famous for his artworks called cut-outs. He would simply use scissors and cut out the paper to create beautiful shapes. A lot of times, these shapes were what we call organic shapes. That means that the edges weren’t straight and geometric like a square or rectangle, but instead had curved lines that resembled things in nature like plants. He called this technique “drawing with scissors.” Henri Matisse, Technique Drawing, Things In Nature, Beautiful Shapes, Artist Names, Organic Shapes

You can do this project in several ways. In the video, I demonstrate how you can make your own monochromatic paper with students using acrylic paint and then use the templates I provide to create Degas dancers out of that paper. However, you can also use the templates and copy them onto paper already on a value scale. The third option is to transfer the template shapes onto construction paper using a graphite transfer method. These options are all explained in the video.
