Works Here: Many activities for people of all ages. There is usually some kind of event going on every weekend, especially during the summer. Traffic is usually pretty hectic, so if you are able to avoiding driving you will be thankful for it. The city is pretty pedestrian and bike friendly, and there are even electric scooters and bikes you can rent to go on your own little adventure! Lots of diverse food options but it can get pretty expensive if you eat out regularly, particularly of you order door dash or uber eats frequently. It gets absolutely beautiful in the spring and summertime -- nothing beats the summer in Seattle. If you aren't already the "outdoorsy" type, you might just find yourself becoming an avid outdoorsman if you spend enough time in the Seattle area. Current Resident: It's nice. It's safe as hell, it's within driving distance, within about 20 minutes to the beach, and about 3 or 4 hours to the mountains. There's shopping, there's decent places to eat in Irvine itself, and a bunch of great places all across OC within driving distance. Google Fiber is coming in the next few years (maybe not soon enough for your 2-year project) and the local cable provider (Cox Communications) is installing gigabit internet fiber across the city soon, too. The reasons not to live here are that it's boring, it's practically owned by the Irvine Corporation which raises rents on good restaurants and stores and forces them out, the home prices are very high, the homeowner's associations are the only legal gangs in the city (hyperbole, but never underestimate the spite-filled overly righteous board member senior citizens with too much time on their hands, walking around and tallying up infractions while everyone else is at work/school).... Current Resident: There is nowhere else like San Jose; I have lived near downtown San Jose all my life. I like the tightknit and welcoming community created, especially because of the many diverse backgrounds. For example, when I was younger, I had a new neighbor who had a different background than my family-she was of Chinese descent while we are of Mexican origin-, but ultimately became our greatest friend because we bonded over food. She liked Mexican tacos while we liked Chinese sweet and sour pork which fostered a community based on reciprocity (we traded food). San Jose also has a lot of cultural centers and events, especially downtown. One thing I would like to see change is the management of cleaning. Former Resident: Boston is a fantastic city with lots to offer. It has lots of history, beautiful architecture, plenty of outdoor activities and some of the greatest restaurants in the world. It’s very easy to get around the city by foot and taking public transportation. That said, if you’re able to take the T to and from work and have a supermarket within walking distance of where you live, you probably won’t need to own a car. Traffic in Boston is heavy, especially during rush hour, and parking can be very expensive and hard to come by. Boston also has a ton of beautiful parks. While it may lack some vibrancy compared to cities such as NYC and Chicago, it still offers plenty of nightlife and entertainment. Current Resident: I live in the heart of the city, right off of Golden Gate Park and Haight Street. I am thrown into a world-wind of diversity and tourism. Being able to bus 10 minutes to get the best Pho in the city, then commuting another 30 minutes to reach the Golden Gate Bridge and having a picnic date at Crissy Fields. Current Resident: The housing affordability is not good. The price to buy a home in Salt Lake City is unaffordable for most. The monthly rent for an apartment is unaffordable and the affordable housing apartments only allow a person to make so much a month, making it impossible to save money and dig themselves out of poverty. Our politicians aren't doing anything to help the homeless population that we have and we have a homeless crisis in our state and the number of people ending up on the streets is increasing everyday. I believe this is due to the unaffordable housing and rent costs, inflation, the very expensive property taxes for home owners, the large quantities of illegal drugs that are coming into my state and not enough resources to help people with substance abuse addictions, not enough shelters and the shelters that we do have make it too difficult for them to stay.
