Irvine Reviews

It's nice. It's safe as hell, it's within driving distance, within about 20 minutes to the beach, and about 3 or 4 hours to the mountains. There's shopping, there's decent places to eat in Irvine itself, and a bunch of great places all across OC within driving distance. Google Fiber is coming in the next few years (maybe not soon enough for your 2-year project) and the local cable provider (Cox Communications) is installing gigabit internet fiber across the city soon, too.
The reasons not to live here are that it's boring, it's practically owned by the Irvine Corporation which raises rents on good restaurants and stores and forces them out, the home prices are very high, the homeowner's associations are the only legal gangs in the city (hyperbole, but never underestimate the spite-filled overly righteous board member senior citizens with too much time on their hands, walking around and tallying up infractions while everyone else is at work/school).

I grew up in Irvine and lived here for 18 years. I consider myself very privileged to have grown up here. The location is amazing--just a short drive away from the beach--and you really can't beat Southern California weather. As I got older, I grew a bit bored of this city. I feel like the only things to do are get food with friends, shop, or maybe go on a long drive to the beach. Also, everything around here closes at 9-10pm, so I would say there isn't much to do when considering nightlife. But, my education was great and I have always felt incredibly safe in this city.
Irvine comes off as a family-friendly, lively, and bustling city. It is known to be a safer city, however crime rates have been on the rise due to neighboring cities. It has a good amount of diversity, as well as lots of delicious food spots to be explored and enjoyed. There are many shopping plazas, as well as public parks that are nice for families, children, and dates. However, it does lack the walkable city aspect. There are available sidewalks all throughout the city, and lots of crosswalks, but each landmark or area tends to have quite the distance between them which makes these walks long and far. Having a car to get around would be essential as it is quite the large suburban city. Some downsides may include the fact that it is expensive, and that there is essentially no nightlife. Most of the activities to do in Irvine include eating, and the costs are not cheap. Shops and restaurants alike tend to close doors by 9-10pm with little options left after.
