Alton Towers Resort has been voted the UK's best theme park for 2020 by the British public.

The Staffordshire-based attraction picked up the accolade at the UK Theme Park awards, while Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Thorpe Park won the silver and bronze spots respectively.

The winners were determined by votes from 154,104 Brits across a number of categories, as well as input from a panel of judges.

Alton Towers proved a hit thanks to its mix of thrilling rides and family-friendly attractions, beating out the competition to take home the gold.

For example, its Wicker Man ride, which opened in 2018, was named the best rollercoaster in the UK, closely followed by its Nemesis ride which offers heaps of twists and loops.

Those after an adrenaline rush may also want to check out the park's Scarefest, which was voted the best theme park Halloween event. (Oh, and this year it's getting a terrifying new maze filled with creepy clowns and plenty more scares).

However, the resort doesn't just cater to thrill-seekers, as there's plenty for younger kids too.

In fact, the park's CBeebies Land was hailed as the public's favourite Family Area, no doubt thanks to the gentle rides, appearances from beloved CBeebies characters and heaps of extra fun such as live shows.

Want to check it out for yourself? You'll need to pre-book as, during the pandemic, the park is limiting its number of guests due to social distancing.

It's also worth noting that the theme park has introduced new health and safety measures, including temperature checks for guests before they are allowed to enter the resort.
