Alton Towers is closing its theme park, hotels, waterpark and spa ahead of England's second lockdown - but the resort hasn't revealed when it plans to re-open.

The Staffordshire-based attraction is temporarily closing following new restrictions coming into force on Thursday 5th November, which includes businesses such as theme parks, hotels and waterparks being ordered by the government to temporarily close.

As a result, Alton Towers will close its doors from Thursday, although it remains open for any visitors who want to visit until Wednesday 4th November. (You will need to pre-book as the theme park is operating at a reduced capacity in order to maintain social distancing rules).

A statement on the resort's website didn't reveal a re-opening date, but instead said: "Alton Towers Resort will remain closed until further notice and we will work to reopen the Resort to guests as soon as it’s appropriate to do so."

Visitors who have pre-booked tickets on dates when the resort won't be open can have their tickets re-validated so they can use them for a later date - you can get the details on how to do this here.

Meanwhile, Alton Towers has said that those with bookings to stay at the resort arriving between 4nd November and 2nd December 2020 will have their short break automatically converted into a monetary voucher which they can use to book another visit.

The second lockdown is currently set to last for four weeks, ending on the 2nd December 2020.

Pre-pandemic, Alton Towers' season would usually run until early November, before doors were closed, usually through to early Spring.

However, usually the resort still offers some festive breaks throughout December, while its waterpark has historically stayed open year-round.

The resort was due to host some festive fun this year including Santa-themed sleepover packages complete with a Santa's Grotto, as well as two new festive walking trails. It's not yet clear whether these are still planned to go ahead, as dates included the 4th-6th and the 11th-23rd December, which fall outside of the expected lockdown dates.
