How to read WhatsApp messages secretly on iPhone without the sender knowing

Clever trick lets you peek at WhatsApp messages without activating the blue ticks marking them as read

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps on iPhone and Android smartphones, but not everyone is a fan of its read receipts.

The app uses a "check mark" system to show when a message has been sent (one grey tick), received (two grey ticks), and read (two blue ticks).

While this can be useful if you're the person who has sent the message, it can be annoying if you are the recipient, because as soon as those ticks go blue there's an expectation on you to respond.

If you're deliberately trying to play it cool or appear unavailable, you may delay reading the message altogether, to avoid having to send a reply.

Luckily, there a couple of ways to cheat the system, and for people with an iPhone 6s or later, one of them is built right into the app.

Instead of tapping on the conversation with the message you want to peek at, press down on the conversation with a bit of force to activate the 3D Touch "Peek" window.

This window will give you a quick glance at previously sent and received messages, along with the newly received message.

From here you can either push harder to "pop" the window and make it full-screen, or you can let go of the display and have it refer to its earlier state.
