There's a massive month of Apple announcements ahead with the US technology giant holding its yearly WWDC Developers Conference at its Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California. Although this might not sound all that thrilling for consumers it's well worth tuning in if you own an iPhone, iPad, MacBook or Apple Watch as it's at this showcase where all the upcoming software advancements and new features are announced.

Apple almost always uses WWDC to unveil its next iOS, iPadOS, watchOS and macOS upgrades and we're expecting WWDC 2024 to be bigger and better than ever.

Although Apple always keeps its news under wraps until the big day, which this year falls on Monday, June 10, there are plenty of rumours that suggest the iPhone is in for some major upgrades.

If the usual tradition is followed, iOS 18 - which will replace the current iOS 17 - will be unveiled on stage during the keynote and it could come packed with new AI updates, easier ways to add emojis, better health features, quick photo editing, huge improvements to the Siri assistant and more. Expect plenty of surprises during the keynote and Apple sometimes even reveals new hardware at WWDC - last year we got our first glimpse of the Vision Pro headset.

So who will get this update and when will it arrive on iPhones?

Apple is pretty good at keeping older iPhones updated for many years but it does sometimes end support for certain devices.

When iOS 17 launched last year, the US firm left the iPhone X and iPhone 8 range off the list which meant owners were left unable to install download and install it.

Although there's no confirmation, 2024 could be a bad year for iPhone XS and XR users with these the most likely to lose support for the latest operating systems. That said, Apple could continue to support these ageing devices as it did last year.

We will have to wait and see which call makers make the iOS 18 list but hopefully, most phones currently running iOS 17 won't have any issues switching.

If Apple follows its usual launch calendar we can expect to see iOS 18 arriving on iPhones in September this year.
