Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins' star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, has been given a lifeline in the NFL after being overlooked during the NFL Draft.

He's been invited to try out with the Seattle Seahawks and if he impresses alongside the rookies, he's likely to sign with the team. Before joining his brother at Alabama as his backup, Taulia was a four-star recruit. He then moved on to Maryland to become the starter.

Taulia stayed with the Maryland Terrapins, leading the offence for four consecutive years before the NCAA denied his request for an extra year of eligibility to remain in school. He threw 77 touchdowns to 37 interceptions with an impressive 67 percent completion rate, enough to see him considered as a late-round draft pick.

However, after going undrafted, Taulia wasn't picked up by any team until the Seahawks offered him a lifeline. Despite his impressive numbers, Taulia has been seen as undersized at 5'10" and 200lbs, and lacking the arm teams look for - something his brother Tua has also been criticised for throughout his career.

In his final season with Maryland, Taulia put up impressive numbers, leading the Big Ten in completions, passing yards and touchdowns - more than first-round pick JJ McCarthy and potential 2025 first-overall pick Drew Allar.

The younger brother of Tua had hoped to extend his college career with a super senior year after only 12 passing attempts in his freshman year as back-up to his older sibling at Alabama. However, his request was denied.

Next week, Taulia will join the Seattle Seahawks' rookie minicamp in Renton, Washington, where he'll compete against former San Jose quarterback Chevon Cordeiro.

Currently, the Seahawks have just three quarterbacks on their roster: starter Geno Smith and Sam Howell, who they traded for from the Washington Commanders. If Taulia impresses, he could potentially take Cordeiro's third spot, giving him the chance to stay with the team throughout training camp.

In the 2024 season, the Seahawks are set to play against the Dolphins. Taulia is hoping to make the roster and serve as Seattle's emergency third quarterback, which could lead to a face-off with his brother Tua.

Tua is expected to receive a significant contract extension sometime this offseason. Now in the final year of his rookie scale contract, he's likely to earn around $50 million per season.
