Luke Shaw has been named in the England squad despite his lack of game time at Manchester United.

The left-back has lost his place at Old Trafford , playing just 70 minutes in the Premier League since October.

He made a rare start in the draw with Bournemouth but was left out of the squads against Rostov and Chelsea.

But with Danny Rose out injured, Shaw has been included by Gareth Southgate for the matches against Germany and Lithuania.

Southampton's Ryan Bertrand is the other left-back in the squad.

"Generally we've tried to pick players who are playing regularly, and one or two have missed out because of that," Southgate said.

"Luke is probably the exception. He's a player we have a lot of belief in.

"Having worked with him before we think he can be an important player for the future.

"Now would be a good time to give him that confidence boost."

Shaw is one of five Manchester United players included for the double-header, with skipper Wayne Rooney injured.

Phil Jones has also been recalled and is joined by Chris Smalling, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford.

There is no place for Arsenal duo Theo Walcott or Danny Welbeck but Jermain Defoe is in alongside Southampton duo Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse.
