Deaths due to faulty jacuzzis are rare but not unheard of. In 1999, health officials across Europe issued warnings about "whirlpool spas" after they caused hundreds of deaths across the continent.

In August of that year, a 59-year-old man contracted legionnaire's disease after installing a hot tub in his home. The following October, a woman in the South East caught the illness after using a friend's hot tub.

That same month, one person died and two others contracted legionnaire's disease from a display model at a garden centre.

Carol Joseph, from the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre at the Public Health Laboratories at the time, said: "This is a new phenomenon and something that has to be addressed. We don't know whether it is poor maintenance or design."
