More bleak British weather could be on the way with maps showing yet more rain this week.

The Met Office says there are showers developing through the north this morning, followed by "isolated thunder" in the afternoon, while it will be “wet and breezy in the far south and southwest. However, people in central parts can expect a “much drier and brighter day".

The weather agency's forecast for Tuesday to Thursday says it will remain “unsettled as low pressure tracks northwards through Tuesday and Wednesday.” It will then turn “more settled on Thursday but remaining cool for many, but a little warmer in the south”, the agency added.

There is better news on the way later in the month, according to the long range weather forecast. The Met Office currently predicts that “many areas” will start the period from Friday, July 12 as “mostly dry as a ridge of high pressure dominates the UK.” They added: “It should feel pleasant enough in mostly light winds and sunshine, with temperatures generally near average, but some rural areas could experience chilly nights.”

But there will be some wet weather again, with little sign of the brief June heatwave returning. “There is also a chance that rain may fringe into easternmost and southwesternmost areas at times,” the Met Office said. “Then a transition to more generally changeable conditions looks most likely, though with a northwest-southeast split in fortunes.

"Northwestern areas will probably see more in the way of cloud and rain, whereas southeastern parts stand a better chance of longer periods of drier and at times, somewhat warmer weather. However, some rain may extend further southeast across all parts of the UK from time to time.”

The UK's national weather and climate service said weather towards the end of the month is harder to predict, with this time of year particularly unpredictable. Conditions could favour above average temperatures and “drier than average conditions overall.” Some forecasters do predict some summer sizzle coming our way. Forecasters at Exacta Weather are more convinced than ever that a major shift is on the horizon, telling us to "get the barbecues ready" around July 16.

Exacta Weather's James Madden has now warned that Brits are in for a scorcher, with mercury levels potentially soaring past 35C, maybe even hitting the 40C mark. In their latest forecast, Madden announced: "Get the barbecues at the ready, as a big change and some big heat are now set to arrive on cue!"

He added: "The expected and well-promised pattern change for July 10-20, particularly July 15-17, is now on and imminent for some very hot to potentially extreme heat, which is now on the horizon for many parts of the country within the next several days."
