Brits have been left stumped after a 'picturesque' UK town was dubbed the most depressing place to live in the country.

Falmouth isn't what typically comes to mind when you picture bleak seaside settlement. The Cornish town is known for its sprawling beaches along the world's third-largest harbour, as well as its relatively sunny weather.

But despite its apparent charm, the area has become the recipient of an unwanted accolade. According to ILiveHere, Falmouth is the most depressing place to call home across the nation, beating out long-time title-holder Peterborough.

"We have to admit, we know absolutely nothing about Falmouth," the site read. "We googled it, it looks picturesque but we’re sure it’s a facade it trades on, and who are we to question the wisdom of the crowd?"

And the news came as a shock both to visitors of the region and residents. "I woulda guessed St Austell, how the hell is Falmouth worse?" one wrote.

Another added: "Are people smoking crack? Falmouth is far and away the most vibrant and interesting town in all of Cornwall. I loved living there."

Some reckoned there could be more to the unlikely vote than meets the eye, with locals trying to keep the town's appeal under wraps. "Spotted the Falmouth resident who wants to keep it for themselves," one wrote.

Another responded: "You’re right, it is all a trick lol."

But not everyone was blinded by Falmouth's charm. Some remarked that while the town boasts some stellar scenery and plenty to do, its apparent charm meant it was becoming pricey as holidaymakers flock there each year, leaving locals high and dry.

"It's not just Falmouth, it's boring all over Cornwall," one wrote. "It's all fur coat, no knickers."

And in 2022, comedian, artist and musician Seamas Carey admitted he could no longer afford to rent in the seaside town as people from out of town bought up property. "I am only too well aware of the issues going on here right now; the lack of affordable housing and the high demand which is pushing house prices up and up; I'm worried about the lack of infrastructure, hospital beds, the roads filling up, the bins overflowing, the surging footfall in the countryside causing damage to the landscape and the eco system," he said.

Falmouth beat Peterborough to the top spot by a mere 27 points. Describing the runner-up, ILiveHere site owners quipped: "Depression noun as in low spirits; despair. Synonyms: cheerlessness, woefulness, ennui, melancholy, Peterborough."
