Celebrity backing for the Mirror’s Free School Meals for All campaign has been overwhelming.

Stars who have signed an open letter to PM Rishi Sunak include Olivia Colman, Kate Winslet, Ed Sheeran, Brian Cox, Phoebe Waller-Bridge Dua Lipa, Nadiya Hussain, Tom Kerridge, Thomasina Miers and Yotam Ottolenghi. Ending child hunger, guaranteeing a mid-day meal for every primary school pupil in England – to level it up with Wales and Scotland – is a no-brainer as well as only fair.

Study after study proves that children with empty stomachs or eating cheap junk can’t concentrate properly, and it would be a real help for families during the cost of living crisis. This Government can always find the money for pet projects and its friends – think scandalous Covid PPE contracts – so there must be no more excuses. As the stars have shown, Free School Meals for All is a cause worth fighting for.

End of the line

HS2 failing to make it to Manchester after Tory axeman Rishi Sunak has left the North of England would be cowardly as well as a grotesque betrayal. The shifty PM has failed to provide proper answers about the future of the high-speed train route, which he’s threatening to scrap.

Voters increasingly think that Sunak and his shambolic government – currently disintegrating before our very eyes – have now reached the end of the line. Whenever this desperate PM talks earnestly about being honest and straight with people, we immediately find that he doing the exact opposite.

Preserve Palin

NO spring chicken, celebrated TV presenter and writer Sir Michael Palin is now a national treasure who deserves a preservation order stuck on him. It has certainly been an extraordinary journey around the world in 80 years.
