A Yorkshire craft brewery has recalled one of its beers out of fear the cans could explode.

The Juice Forsyth IPA, inspired by the late British TV legend Bruce Forsyth, by Brew York has been recalled as there have been reports that cans have exploded due to over-carbonation. The recall, issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), applies to 440ml products with a best before date of July 23 2024 and is specific to items sold in England. The product affected has the batch code: Gyle 1036. The date and batch code can be found at the bottom of the can.

Brew York has advised anyone with the Juice Forsyth IPA not to drink the product and to contact the brewery through its email at: store@brewyork.co.uk for a refund and replacement.

Brew York said those who have bought the can should try and store it in a cool environment such as a fridge, and if possible to "sefely dispose of it". To do this, the brewery advises customers to open it while it’s submerged in water – and while wearing hand and eye protection if possible.

The brewery said: "To safely dispose of the can, we advise submerging this in water (a full sink is perfect) with the ring pull facing away from you, and carefully opening this whilst wearing hand and eye protection as a precaution. Once any initial pressure has been released and you're confident it's appropriate to do so, continue to empty the can."

The wording on the can describes the 5.0% ABV drink as a "pineapple, mango and passion fruit tropical explosion". The page for Juice Forsyth on Brew York’s online shop pays tribute to the much-loved Strictly Come Dancing presenter, who died in 2017. The cans also feature a silhouette of Forsyth in his famous "thinker" pose.

It says: "Good game, good game! Do you wanna go higher? Then enjoy the juicy bonus fruited IPA, that combines Cascade, Citra, CTZ & Mosaic hops, with muchos pineapple and mango for a tropical explosion as bold and juicy as the legendary entertainer that this salutes."

What are recall notices?

Products can be recalled for a range of different reasons including safety – if a product displays risks for the customer – or quality – when the product isn't working as it should be.

The Food Standards Agency is in charge of issuing alerts when there is a problem with a food product. The product can either be "withdrawn" which is where is it taken off the shelves or "recalled" which is when customers are asked to return it.

Food products need to be recalled if they are found to have been contaminated with pathogens that could cause food poisoning, or if plastic or metal has been found in the product due to manufacturing faults. Food items also need to be recalled if any allergen information is missing or incorrect.
