We all want to keep our homes clean and in tip-top condition - but sometimes, just because something looks as good as new, doesn't necessarily mean that it is.

That's what TikTok user Nancy Birtwhistle thought when she had a "stinky sink".

Despite it looking shiny and fresh, it was actually disgusting on closer inspection. She said that she wanted to give people a "warning" because the same kind of dirt and grime could be built up in their sink too.

Nancy said in a video that she thought her sink looked "quite clean", saying it was "white and bright". But when she took the drain cover off, it was a completely different story underneath.

She was concerned as there was "still a bit of a smell" coming from it, saying in the video: "I wonder what's lurking down there."

Nancy then pulled off the cover, and her reaction was a horrified "yuck". With a piece of kitchen roll, she began to pull out the disgusting thick, black mess. Using a spoon, she spooned some of it out, exclaiming: "This is gross".

To banish the "thick gunk", she rinsed it off, putting a bucket under the sink to avoid a "flood". She then used her "basic magic" kitchen cleaner, because it's "non-acidic" and natural. She washed everything in a bowl, so she "could tip the bowl outside, rather than tip it back into the sink".

She said that the mess was "tea and coffee stained soap scum" and "debris", and put together they "really do smell awful".

To clean the sink itself, her tip saw her use a teaspoon of green bleach, and a scrubber to make it clean again. When she placed the drain cover back over, inside the sink looked so much cleaner.

She ended the video by giggling: "My sink was smelly, and now I know why", sharing a before and after picture of her handiwork.

In the comments, someone joked: "I miss two minutes ago when I wasn't concerned about what's in my sink."

Another said: "I’m actually going to get up and clean my sink right now. Thanks for the reminder." Someone else admitted: "Omg my sink was terrible lol I didn’t realise."
