Meghan Markle has been urged to mend her relationship with her father Thomas Markle amid their years-long estrangement.

Thomas, who suffered a stroke in 2022, hasn't seen Meghan and Harry in six years, with the last time they spoke being when he was in a hospital bed before the couple got married. When Meghan wed Prince Harry in 2018, she cut ties with her dad's side of the family.

The Duchess cut ties with her dad's side of the family after her father staged paparazzi photos prior to the royal wedding in May 2018. And now, after years of estrangement, a royal commentator has urged Meghan to "make amends" with her father before she sets her sights on "changing her image".

Speaking to GB News America, Daily Mail columnist Maureen Callahan said: "She probably won't listen to the best minds around her. This reminds me of our last conversation about Meghan and her inability, for whatever reason, to mend fences with her own sick father."

Ms Callahan added: "I think if she really had any intention of making amends with not just the King and the Prince and Princess of Wales, but with the British people to whom gave her so much goodwill and the wedding.

"Step number one, I think, would be to very quietly make amends with her own father. Show that charity begins at home, and then you make the slow approach to the royals, whom you have so denigrated and accused of terrible things, while you monetised all these accusations.

"It can't be that they're so terrible that you want nothing to do with them and you could never step foot in the UK again unless it's a luxury Windsor lounge at Heathrow. You may be overreacting."

The father and daughter duo have been estranged since 2018

She also urged Meghan to "get everything right in terms of priorities". Ms Callahan pointed to the fact King Charles and the Princess of Wales have both been diagnosed with cancer and said this is the perfect time for Meghan "to swallow some of that humble pie she's cooking up".

However, the royal expert worried Meghan is past the point of issuing an apology. Last September, Thomas spoke out on British television when he appeared on Good Morning Britain. "I've always been here for her, I love her, I'll love her forever," he said on the show. He added: "I want her to reach out to me and let me see my grandkids and let me have a little peace. It's been five years."

Elsewhere in the interview, Thomas spoke of how he still hasn't seen his grandkids. He said: "I want to see my grandkids and I think the King wants to see his too," referring to King Charles III and how he hasn't seen much of his grandchildren since Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior working Royals in 2020 and moved to Montecito, California.
