Cuban actress Broselianda Hernández Boudet has been found dead at the age of 56.

Her body was discovered along the shoreline in Miami Beach,Florida, after her family say she left her home to buy cigarettes.

Police said on Thursday that there were no apparent signs of foul play, and the medical examiner's office is yet to determine a cause of death.

Broselianda had been living in Miami for the last five years following a successful two-decade career in Cuba, starring in TV, film and theatre.

Miami Beach Police spokesperson Ernesto Rodriguez said that a witness called the police early on Wednesday after finding a woman near the shoreline.

She was later identified as Broselianda.

Her family said she had gone out late on Tuesday to buy cigarettes and never came home or returned their calls as they tried to locate her.

The star rose to fame in Cuban soap operas in the 1990s, appearing in the likes of When Water Returns to Land and Women of Honor.

In 2010, she notably played the mother of Cuban independence hero Jose Marti in movie Marti, the Eye of the Canary.

She also starred in movies Habanera and Things I Left in Havana.

She filmed The Companion in 2015, her final movie before she headed to Miami.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel paid tribute on Twitter following the sad news of Broselianda's death.

He posted: "Farewell to an exceptional actress named Broselianda. We mourn her early loss. Our condolences to her family and friends."
