Renée Zellweger is officially returning for the fourth instalment of the beloved movie series, Bridget Jones.

The actress, 54, first starred in the original movie, Bridget Jones's Diary, in 2001. The romantic comedy follows a 32-year-old single woman who writes a diary focusing on the things she wishes to happen in her life. Her life then drastically changes when two men fight for her affection - Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason was released in 2004 and Bridget Jones's Baby was released in 2016. The fourth instalment is titled Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, with filming starting in May this year. Hugh, who plays Daniel Cleaver, will also be making a return to the franchise.

Emma Thompson, who starred as Doctor Rawlings in the 2016 movie, is also back, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall showing up as newcomers. In the book, Bridget still writes in her diary and logs her weight, her alcohol units and her pieces of Nicorette gum after giving up smoking.

She navigates life as a single mother after Mark Darcy, the lawyer (played by Colin Firth) who marries after she finds out about her pregnancy, dies. However, it is not known whether the new movie will completely follow the story of the book, written by Helen Fielding.

The author was previously asked about the possibility of a fourth movie and she told Radio Times: "Every film that gets made is a miracle. I think it's really difficult to make films and to make them happen and to make them good and we want them to be really good. But I really hope so. I'd love to see it on the screen."

Hugh did not appear in the third film, but Bridget was seen attending his character Daniel Cleaver's funeral. At the end of the movie, it was revealed that he had been miraculously found alive after surviving a plane crash. "Bridget is back and is about to take over London. Filming is being mapped out already and all of the pre-production is in place," a source recently told the Mail on Sunday about the new movie.

"There was some uncertainty about whether it would get off the ground, but the movie is coming." They added that Zellweger was excited about bringing the character back because she "adores the character so much".
