We are happy to announce that WIPO and the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) concluded a new collaboration concerning alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the area of standard essential patents (SEPs) this week. Through this partnership, WIPO and CIPO will work to raise awareness of ADR procedures for the resolution of SEP disputes among IP stakeholders in Canada. This is the second SEP-focused collaboration between the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center and a Member State, following a first partnership concluded with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 2022. Country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) are crucial in defining national identities on the Internet, promoting local businesses, and ensuring online security and stability. On Wednesday 10 July, during the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO annual Assemblies, we hosted an insightful session and collaborative event focusing on the expansion of WIPO’s ccTLD Program. This side event for IP Offices and country delegates discussed ways to enhance interaction between IP offices, national domain registries, and brand owners regarding domain names and trademarks. It was a pleasure to welcome a full room in person at WIPO and more than 100 participants who joined us virtually. During the session, the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center presented its recent ccTLD-related activities, including releasing its updated WIPO ccTLD guide in six languages. Many thanks to member states Australia, Morocco, Rwanda, and the Dominican Republic, who all offered their valuable insights. We hope this event inspires similar partnerships that will benefit ccTLDs and small businesses in their IP portfolio management and dispute prevention. Such collaborations are vital for protecting brands online, promoting e-commerce, and reinforcing national innovation ecosystems.
