📢 Elizabeth Blackwell Institute to welcome new Director 📢 We are delighted to announce that Professor Pat Kehoe has been appointed as the Director of the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute. We are a hub for interdisciplinary health research at the University of Bristol supporting researchers and bringing together people with different knowledge, experience and skills to address health research challenges. Pat’s research expertise is in dementia research, and he brings a wealth of experience in interdisciplinary health research through his role as Health and Life Science Faculty Research Director. Professor Pat Kehoe will take up the post of Institute Director from 1 August 2024. Pat Kehoe said: “I am genuinely honoured to be given this opportunity to help take the institute further forward in the same ground-breaking spirit as the truly impressive person after whom it is named. We now have an amazing opportunity to build on the fantastic research communities the Institute has already grown and supported to date, whilst nurturing the new ideas and conversations that are emerging from the coming together of new colleagues, groups and Schools following the University re-structure. He continued: “I really can’t wait to get stuck in with this very experienced team and work with them to develop and grow our Equitable and Sustainable Health Research from every corner of the University. Most importantly I am hoping we can have some fun in doing so working with inspiring and enthusiastic people on what could be exciting health-related research that could be life-changing for many people.” Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/eR4d_Zrk

We're delighted to see this report from Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) on the work we did with their funder discussion groups, building on a Wellcome Trust-funded project conducted by Elizabeth Blackwell Institute (EBI) on improving EDI in pre-award funding processes. It includes some really helpful examples of work already being done on this at Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in New Zealand, National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in Australia, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and Wellcome themselves. Thanks to support from University of Bristol we're continuing to work with EBI and DORA on this important topic - more on that to follow! https://lnkd.in/enkBhmm4

How can we persuade patients who face surgery to keep off tobacco? Although there have been considerable efforts to curb its use in the UK and elsewhere, over 13 percent of UK adults continue to smoke tobacco. After surgery, patients who use tobacco are more likely to experience cardiovascular and pulmonary complications, as well as wound infections and intensive-care admissions – all of which influence overall mortality rates. Researchers from the University of Bristol investigate the best way to help surgical patients to stop smoking. https://lnkd.in/gVaZsWdJ #NoSmokingDay2024 #smokingcessation #nosmoking
