Coca-Cola "Masterpiece": A Feast for the Eyes

This ad, shared widely, showcases stunning visuals that will probably keep you watching start to finish. Although many who have shared it underscore its AI-generated aspects, the actual involvement of AI in its creation is less than you might think.

  • Commentator Luc Debaisieux praised director Henry Scholfield , who's renowned for creating visually breathtaking ads and music videos.
  • Noah Wohl noted that “the use of AI for style transfer techniques has been prevalent for a few years now.”
  • Ollie Gilmour chimed in saying “the visuals were crafted using in-camera and CG techniques, then enhanced with AI style transfer techniques to mimic the style of famous painters. It’s VFX magic sprinkled with a dash of AI, all under the umbrella of Electric.”
  • Watch this VFX making of video from Electric Theater to view full credits and how the ad is a stunning example of the potential when human creativity meets advanced technology. As Mark Lees insightfully noted: Technique is NOT an idea.

OpenAI’s CEO Calls For AI Regulation

If you're after a summary of the lengthy transcript here, or the 3-hour video here, this is the TLDR:

  • Sam Altman supports AI regulation, proposing the establishment of an AI safety oversight agency, and urging the US to take a leadership role in regulation. Colorado Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet has introduced legislation to establish such an agency.
  • Altman specifically proposed the licensing of AI models, which could benefit OpenAI's business. He unveiled OpenAI's plans to launch a new open-source language model in response to rising competition from other open-source alternatives.
  • Altman agreed that creators should be compensated but didn't provide specifics. Altman also agreed that Section 230, which protects social media companies from liability for their users' content, doesn't apply to AI models and called for new regulation.

Implications for the Creative Industry?

  • Critics argue that the excessive concentration of AI power in large corporations could result in these entities dictating the rules for AI regulation.
  • The AI model licensing that Sam Altman discusses could render the use of open-source AI tools legally challenging and potentially even criminally liable. This could dramatically transform the creative landscape, considering how open-source tools like Blender and Stable Diffusion have spurred creativity and innovation by democratizing creative technology.
  • Conversely, this new regulatory environment could stimulate greater responsibility, accountability, and ethical considerations in the development and application of AI. It might also inspire the creation of new AI technologies that conform to regulations, potentially pushing the boundaries of creative possibilities.
